LAKELAND, Fla. – With 3.2 seconds remaining in regulation, the No. 4 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team had its undefeated season snapped, as the visiting No. 11 Rollins College Tars came away with a 14-13 victory on Moccasin Field on Friday evening.
Florida Southern is now 4-1 overall, and 3-1 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Rollins is now 4-1, overall, and 4-1 SSC.
Marina Jozokos led the Mocs attack with four goals and three assists, while
Hailey Daleo added four goals. Goalkeeper
Brittany Iamele made seven saves for Florida Southern.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Half
- Jozokos led off the scoring just two and a half minutes into the game, taking a pass from sophomore Lizzy Lynch.
- Liz Fahey of Rollins then scored the first of her game-high five goals, knotting the game at one apiece.
- Jozokos scored a minute later, putting the Mocs back in the lead, 2-1.
- At the 18:06 mark, senior Sarah Grady scored on a free position, and Southern led 3-1.
- Rollins then scored three straight, taking a 4-3 lead.
- Daleo then tied the score at four, taking a pass from junior midfielder Maliah Benedetto.
- Fahey of Rollins then went on a personal three-goal run, propelling the Tars back on top, 7-4.
- Florida Southern responded with their own three-goal run, with markers from Lynch, Grady, and Daleo.
- Rollins would sneak one more goal in before the half, with just 14 seconds remaining, taking an 8-7 lead into the break.
2nd Half
- Florida Southern started the second half on another three-goal run. This time it was Jozokos, and Daleo twice, as the Mocs now led 10-8, with 22:08 remaining.
- Undeterred, the Tars retaliated with three goals of their own, moving ahead, 11-10.
- With exactly 11:00 remaining, Lynch scored, unassisted, knotting the score at 11.
- Sixty four seconds later, Fahey scored her fifth and final goal of the game, before sophomore Katie Yeagle scored for the Mocs to tie the score at 12.
- Rollins then took a 13-12 lead with 4:01 to go in regulation.
- Jozokos stepped up and scored with just 2:07 remaining, setting the table for a dramatic finish.
- Rollins found possession, and called a timeout with 27.7 seconds remaining, setting up the final play.
- With 3.2 seconds remaining, Sammy Ottimo scored her second goal of the game to seal the win for the Tars
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Both goalies played well in the game. Iamele for the Mocs made seven saves, while Gabby Tanner made six for the Tars.
- Rollins took 27 shots today, with Florida Southern taking 24.
- Grady scored twice today for FSC, with both being free position goals.
- Jozokos now has scored 99 goals in her career at Florida Southern, in 55 games played. She has 133 goals overall, including her freshman season at Limestone.
