Jenike Reaches 1,000 Career Points at FSC in Win over Nova Southeastern

LAKELAND, Fla. — Julia Jenike hits a Florida Southern College career milestone of 1,000 points in a Moccasin uniform to lead women's basketball to a 78-69 win over Nova Southeastern at George W. Jenkins Field House in Streamline Sale Arena. 
 
"Nova Southeastern was a good team with very discipline, but it was nice to hold on to the lead and win it at home," said head coach Betsy Harris. "We just have to be consistent, we have to give effort the whole game. Julia is just one of those that is always a hard worker...she has been great for our program. She is basically the workhorse of the team and it's starting to mean more for her and for all of them and they are starting to see how capable we are and how good this team can actually be." 
 
Florida Southern improves to 8-7 overall and 6-3 in the Sunshine State Conference. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
  • Freshman Paula Real connected with Sara Wohlgemuth to put the Moccasins on the board first to make it 2-0. 
  • Ashley Shell hit back-to-back shots and a free throw putting FSC up 7-5. 
  • The Sharks were able to take back a lead until Whitney Jacob sank a jumper followed by a layup to make the advantage of 11-9 with 2:09 left in the quarter. 
  • Nova Southeastern tied it from the free line, but junior Mackenzie Steele hit a shot in the paint to take a 2-point lead. 
  • The Sharks and Mocs tied the game four times with four lead changes to end the quarter with NSU on top 15-14. 
2nd Quarter
  • The quarter started out with Shell giving FSC the lead with a layup.
  • Jacob put the Mocs up by four with a layup that resulted in a foul to send the graduate student to the line for the and one to make it 19-15 with 8:27 left in the half. 
  • Steel sank a shot beyond the arc after the Sharks went on a 6-0 run to take the lead by one for a 22-21 deficit. 
  • Graduate Student J. Jenike hit a jumper to increase FSC lead by three. 
  • Florida Southern closed out the half going on a 13-0 run to send Nova Southeastern to the locker down by 14, 37-23. 
3rd Quarter
  • FSC started the quarter hot with a 3-pointer from freshman Arielle Dabu with an assist from J. Jenike to make it 40-23.
  • At 6:17, Julia Jenike hit her 1,000-career point as a Moccasin with a layup and followed it up with a free throw, putting FSC up by 16-points. 
  • After Wohlgemuth hit a shot in the paint, she found Shell under the net on a fast break to make it 52-34 with 2:33 remaining.
  • Steele would end the quarter for FSC with a free throw and a jumper to make it a 55-38 lead for the Mocs.
 4th Quarter
  • It wasn't until 8:41 when shots started to fall, as Steele hit back-to-back throws followed by a J.Jenike steal that found Steele again for a 3-point basket. 
  • The final quarter was a game of free throws as J.Jenike made both shots at the 3:47 minute for a 65-51 score before the Sharks went on a 6-0 run to close in the Mocs lead.
  • Wohlgemuth went on a run for FSC with a fast break layup that sent the redshirt freshman to the line hitting the free throw to make it 68-57 followed shortly with two shots putting the Mocs up by seven. 
  • The defensive hold for Florida Southern, Domenica Zamora was sent to the line on a fast break hitting both shots for a 72-65 lead for FSC. 
  • J.Jenike would end it for the Mocs with made free throws to capture a 78-69 win. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • J. Jenike now owns 1,010 career points as a Moccasin to become the 24th Moccasin to reach the 1,000-point mark.
  • Along with Jenike, Steele led the way against Nova Southeastern with 16 points, followed by Jacob with 15 points and Wohlgemuth with 13. 
  • Steele's 16 points were a season-high and eclipsed the 800-point mark in the win.
  • Jacob produced 15 points and now has 1,509 points in her career, dating back to her time at Regis University. 
  • Wohlgemuth scored 13 points and picked up 8 assists, a new career-high, breaking her personal record set against Rollins on New Year's Eve. 
  • The Mocs forced 22 turnovers, scoring 38 points on possessions off turnovers.
UP NEXT
Florida Southern hit the road Wednesday, Jan. 19 to face another SSC opponent in Tampa. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
