Mocs Minutes: Swimming Hosts Florida Tech as Basketballs Travel to PBA This Weekend

  • Florida Southern (M) | The No. 8 Florida Southern men's team beat another ranked opponent with a 143-120 team score over No. 12 Nova Southeastern last Friday. Junior Matteo Zampese led the Mocs with three event wins as he hit the top time for the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke, just edging out teammate Ludovico Viberti. Zampese earned his third win in the meet in the 200 IM. Brandon Dyck won the 100 and 200 backstroke, as Miguel Bernotti won the 200 yard butterfly and Kyle Micallef continued his win streak in the 50 yard freestyle event. Despite their Saturday meet against Lynn being canceled, the Mocs have their last meet of the regular season and another opportunity to prepare for next month's Sunshine State Conference Championships.
  • Florida Southern (W) | The No. 20 women's team looks to improve after a tough team loss against No. 4 Nova Southeastern last Friday. Despite the loss, the Mocs have several swimmers with B Standard NCAA times and will continue to improve before next month's SSC Championships and NCAA qualifications shortly after. Sophomore Jazzy Hoffmann earned Florida Southern's sole event win after a fantastic 50 yard freestyle battle. Olivia Miles continued to perform in distance events, and finished just half a second behind the top time in the 500 yard freestyle against the Sharks. The women had nine different swimmers with podium finishes in their last meet.
  • Florida Tech (M) | The Florida Tech men's team enter the meet at FSC registering votes in the latest CSCAA poll. The Panthers had a big win over Rollins College last time out. FIT was led by Kyle Gibson with three event wins including the 100 and 200 breaststroke, setting up a great challenge for Florida Southern's Zamipese and Viberti. Jay Jay Fonnotto won the 200 fly and 200 backstroke to help propel the Panthers to a win.
  • Florida Tech (W) | Registering votes, the Florida Tech women's team was unable to beat No. 19 Rollins last week. Kennedy Nolan led the team with wins in the 50 freestyle and 200 freestyle events. Savannah Brennan had a dominating win in the mile freestyle with second place 14 seconds behind. Tomorrow is the last meet and a last chance for both teams to fine-tune times before conference championships.

  • Florida Southern hits the road after two consecutive home wins versus Barry (1/22) and Florida Tech (1/26). The Moccasins defeated Barry 75-59 before taking on the Panthers of Florida Tech and beating them 56-39. The SSC defensive player of the week continued to dominate defensively as Whitney Jacob recorded her fifth double-double while recording her FSC career-high of 15 boards against Florida Tech. Julia Jenike and Mackenzie Steele followed along with 13 points and 10 points to round out the double-digit scoring for the Mocs.
  • On the season, Whitney Jacob continues to lead the team in scoring and still sits second in the conference with a 17.5 per game average and 297 overall points. Julia Jenike leads the conference, averaging .451 from beyond the 3-point arc and averaging 15.3 points per game to move up to fourth in the SSC. Sara Wohlgemuth comes eighth for the SSC for assists, averaging 3.1 assists per game.
  • In conference play, Whitney Jacob and Julia Jenike are the two Mocs with a double-digit scoring average as the two graduate students are hitting a 16.7 for Jenike followed by Jacob with a 16.2 scoring average in conference action.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic is currently on a five game losing stretch as the Sailfish last win was against Florida Tech on Jan. 5 with a score of 53-48. PBA most recently fell to the Sharks of Nova Southeastern at home with a 65-51 decision. Palm Beach Atlantic only had a five-point loss in Winter Park at Rollins when they fell 58-53 after coming back from a 13-point deficit to start out the final quarter.
  • On the season, Palm Beach Atlantic is holding the worst opponent field goal percentage which is good for the Moccasins as the Sailfish have allowed 457 shots for a .436 percentage. Florida Southern is now 7-0 this season when out-rebounding their opponent. In their matchup earlier this season, the Mocs notched 30 rebounds to the Sailfish 31.
  • In conference play, this is the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the first coming on December 4th. Florida Southern won 89-67 during the first home SSC game of the 2021-22 season. Whitney Jacob scored her season-high of 26 points while three other Mocs scored in double-digits with J. Jenike (14 points), Madlena Gerke (13 points), and Arielle Dabu (10 points). The team shot .565 from field goal range, .500 from the 3-point and .625 from the line.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern holds a 28-3 series lead heading into the 32nd meeting between the Mocs and Sailfish. Florida Southern is 14-1 against Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, the most recent away matchup coming on Feb. 20, 2021, that saw the Moccasins defeat the Sailfish, 71-60.

  • Florida Southern hits the road for the first of two road games in the coming week with the trip to West Palm Beach after defeating Florida Tech 81-78 in a thrilling come back in the second half Wednesday. Both E.J. Dambreville and Luke Anderson scored 15 points in the win while Jack Casale added 12, DeAndre Campbell and Xavier Rhodes tallied 11.
  • On the season, Xaiver Rhodes, Jack Casale, E.J. Dambreville, and Tarik Mckelphin continue to average double-figures to lead the Mocs offensively. Rhodes stands atop the charts at 13.9 points per game (ppg), while Dambreville and Casale are next at 13.3 ppg, and Mckelphin with 12.9 ppg. Defensively, Dambreville is the team leader in rebounding with 179 rebounds, 9.9 per game. Rhodes paces the team in steals (31) and assists (85) in 17 games played.
  • In conference play, the same four players, Dambreville, Rhodes, Casale, and Mckelphin all continue to average double-figures in scoring with Dambreville atop at 14.5, Rhodes in second at 14.0 followed by a tie of Casale and Mckelphin at 12.8. Dambreville has hauled in 104 rebounds in 11 SSC games thus far for an average of 9.5.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic hosts Florida Southern after falling at home to no. 2 Nova Southeastern 96-74. The Sailfish saw Will Lee lead the way with 16 points just ahead of Alexander Gorton's 15 and Jules Jasmin's 12. Gorton completed the double-double with 10 rebounds on the night. The Sailfish are carrying a five-true-game skid into the contest, with the last actual win dating back to December 31 at Saint Leo (97-88). PBA has picked up a pair of forfeit wins on Jan. 5 (Florida Tech) and Jan. 12 (Lynn) to hold a 5-7 record in SSC play.
  • On the season, Will Lee leads the team in scoring with 13.3 ppg while Jules Jasmin is second at 12.5. Jakob Hester is third on the team and rounds out double-digit averages with 10.8 ppg.
  • In conference play, the averages for Lee increase to 15.2 ppg in 10 games played while Hester and Jules both increase to 12.9 and 12.7, respectively.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern holds a 35-6 record all-time against Palm Beach Atlantic including the 83-76 win earlier this season in Lakeland where the Mocs saw four players score in double-figures with E.J. Dambreville leading the way with 23 points. On the road in the series, FSC is 12-6 in Rubin Arena including a 104-86 win there a year ago.
