DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's basketball opened up the 2022 portion with a 63-44 win over Sunshine State Conference opponent Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night at ICI Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Betsy Harris. "Our defense was tough tonight and that is what we have to been preaching the last week in practice".
Florida Southern improves to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in the Sunshine State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
- Sara Wohlgemuth starts the Moccasins out with a layup to put FSC on the board first with a 2-0 score at the 8:19 mark.
- Freshman Paula Real comes in hot off the bench and finds Julia Jenike set up outside the arc. The graduate student, Jenike sinks a 3-pointer to take back the lead at 5-4 with just under five minutes in the quarter.
- Jenike continued to put the pressure on the Embry-Riddle hitting a layup with an assist from Wohlgemuth on a fastbreak to go into the media timeout with a 7-4 lead.
- Real took her shot from beyond the arc, sinking a three to increase Florida Southern's lead to six points.
- Jenike battles for an offensive rebound and hits the and one to increase the Mocs score up to 13-4 with 3:14 on the clock.
- The Cincinnati,Ohio native shots continued to fall, as Jenike increased FSC lead to double-digits with a 10-point lead to make it 16-6 with a 1:33 left.
- 1:25 left in the quarter, and Real's 3-pointer fell to increase their lead to 13-points.
- Whitney Jacob shots finally started to fall in for the Parker, Colorado native hitting a layup to end the quarter with Florida Southern up by 13-points for a 21-8 score.
2nd Quarter
- Nothing was falling for either team, until the sixth minute when the Eagles finally put a shot up. Mackenzie Steele answered back with a layup for the Mocs to make it 23-10 with five minutes left in the half.
- Ashley Shell was fouled and sent to the line for two, the redshirt junior went 1-for-2 to increase FSC lead.
- Madlena Gerke found the hands of Steele, to set up the Plant City, Florida native for back-to-back layups for the redshirt junior to increase the lead for the Moccasins up by four-points to a 29-12 advantage.
- Jacob battled around an Embry-Riddle defense to hit a jumper just outside the paint for a 31-12 lead with 2:31 on the clock.
- Shell continued to battle in the paint hitting a layup with an Eagles defender on her back putting Mocs up by 20; before hitting both free throws to make it a 35-13 lead with just under a minute and half.
- Jacob is sent to the line after getting fouled under the net; the transfer hit both free throws sending Florida Southern to the locker room with a 37-13 lead for halftime.
3rd Quarter
- Shell started things off for the Moccasins with a defensive rebound setting up Jenike for a jumper outside the paint to make it 39-15 with 8:04 on the clock.
- Exactly a minute later at the 7:04 mark Shell and Jenike switch it up and Shell hits a layup with an assist from Jenike to make it another 24-point lead.
- Shell's shots continued to fall this time with an assist from Real to make it 43-20 just under the sixth minute mark.
- Jacob earns the foul for FSC after hitting a layup sending her to the line to make the and one and increase the lead to 46-20 with 4:14 left in the quarter.
- Jenike shots continued to fall from beyond the arc, sinking a 3-pointer from Steele increasing their lead to 25-points.
- Off a personal foul, Gerke was posted outside the arc hitting the three with an assist from Real earning another foul hitting the free throw to make it a 29-point lead, the largest thus far for a 53-24 advantage with 2:20 remaining.
- Jenike is fouled on a fast break going 2-for-2 from the line for another 29-point lead ending the quarter with a 55-26 point lead.
4th Quarter
- Florida Southern could not score until the sixth minute when Aubrey Burke hit a jumper from Jacob to take back a 26-point lead making it 57-31.
- Jenike hits her final jumper to make it 20 points for the night and give FSC a 59-33 lead.
- A personal foul sends Real to the line making both her free throws for a 61-39 score with just under two minutes in regulation.
- Wohlgemuth finds Real for another two-points for the Spain native ending the game with a 63-44 win in Daytona Beach.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Mocs continued their hot shooting with 40.0 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from beyond the arc.
- Graduate Student Jenike led the way for FSC going 7-8 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc for 20 points.
- Real was the only other Moc to finish in double-digits with 10 points going 3-6 from the paint and 2-4 from the three.
- Defensively, the Moccasins were led by Wohlgemuth and Real both totaling six boards.
- Four Florida Southern women finished with three assists including Wohlgemuth, Jenike, Jacob, and Real.

Florida Southern continue their road slate on Saturday, January 8th with another Sunshine State Conference competition in St.Petersburg against Eckerd. The women are scheduled to face the Tritons for a 2:00 p.m tip off.
