LAKELAND, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference Regular Season Champion Florida Southern Moccasins finished the regular season with a 3-0 win over Rollins College Tuesday night at Berend Field. The win gave the Mocs their eighth-straight win.
The Mocs (12-1-3, 8-1-1 SSC), who clinched the SSC Regular Season title on Saturday, scored off a penalty kick in the first half and added two more goals in the second. The Tars (5-7-3, 2-6-1 SSC) had nine shots in the game but were unable to score in the Moccasin shutout and the first FSC win against Rollins since 2007.
Florida Southern traded shots with Rollins early, with the Tars the first to tally a shot on goal but Moccasin keeper
Jenny Staten made the save to keep the game scoreless halfway through the half. A foul drawn by Angelinga Coelho in the box shortly later set up a Moccasin penalty kick. Coelho took the PK honors and scored for the 1-0 lead, Coelho's sixth goal of the season.
The Mocs kept the one-goal advantage through the first half and started the second half with a strong offensive push. A deep pass by
Courtney Chomko led to
Alison Jenkins scoring her fourth goal of the season and 2-0 Moccasin lead in the 58th minute. Just three minutes later,
Malia Brost took a free kick about 20 yards out and found the far post for another Moccasin goal, Brost's fourth of the year.
The Tars took a few shots on goal with the Mocs up 3-0, but Staten corralled the attempts and finished with four saves, three in the second half, in her sixth shutout of the season. Postgame, the Mocs were presented with the 2022 SSC Regular Season Championship trophy. The regular season ends with 12 wins, the most since 2009, and the eight SSC wins are the most in program history.
The Mocs will have a first-round bye as the number one seed of the SSC Tournament and face their next opponent for the SSC semifinal match next Thursday, Nov. 3, set for a 7 p.m. start at Berend Field.
