Mocs Minutes: Volleyball Hosts Eckerd Tuesday Night in Dig for Diabetes Match

  • Florida Southern has dropped three-straight matches heading into Tuesday night's contest. Despite the losing streak, the Mocs have won three-straight at home and have not lost inside Jenkins Field House since Sept. 24. Tuesday night's match will be FSC's Dig for Diabetes match where the Mocs draw attention to the millions of people battling diabetes on a daily basis.
  • Junior Mackenzie Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.36 kills per set which ranks her fifth in the SSC. Senior Ali Travis (2.48) is the only other Moc averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza has been running the offense from the setter position and is averaging 8.85 assists per set. She currently ranks eighth in the SSC in assists per set. Travis leads a potent serving attack with 34 service aces while Garza (29) and graduate student Beatrice Formilan (23) each have 20-plus. The Mocs as a team rank third in the SSC in service aces per set at 1.75 only trailing Eckerd (1.87) and Lynn (1.78).
  • Formilan leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.80 digs per set this season to rank third in the SSC. At the net, it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 67 total blocks. She is averaging 0.84 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in the top five are graduate student Emma Shaddix (50), senior Jana Gilic (49), Travis (28) and Petermann (28).
  • Eckerd has won 10 of its last 11 contests with two wins over ranked opponents including then-No. 4 Tampa, then-No. 13 West Florida. Tuesday night's match will mark the second of five-straight on the road for the Tritons who are just 4-4 in true road matches this season.
  • Senior Joelle Coulter leads the Tritons offensively with 3.22 kills per set this season despite missing seven matches throughout the year. Junior Anna Jungjohann (2.66), sophomore Stella Antypa (2.53) and sophomore Damyah Joyner (2.51) all are averaging over 2.50 kills per set this season. Senior Krysten Garrison has been control of the offense and is dishing out 10.08 assists per set to rank fourth in the SSC. The Tritons lead the SSC in service aces per set at 1.87 and are led by sophomore Ashley Eck (36), Antypa (30) and Garrison (20) who all have 20-or-more aces on the season.
  • Defensively, Eck leads the way with 4.58 digs per set in the back to rank fourth in the SSC. Sophomore Kalli Schoening (66) and Jungjohann (64) lead the front line with 60-plus blocks each.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Tritons have met an impressive 90 times since 1976. Florida Southern has a commanding 77-13 lead in the overall series but Eckerd has won three of the last five meetings between the two programs but just four of their 13 all-time victories in the series have come in Lakeland. Eckerd defeated Florida Southern 3-0 earlier this season in St. Petersburg with Stella Antypa leading the Triton effort with 11 kills over the three sets. Senior Ali Travis led the Mocs with seven kills.
