Mocs Minutes: Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day Saturday

Florida Southern closes out the regular season Saturday afternoon by hosting the 16th-ranked Barry University Buccaneers. The Moccasins will honor three seniors prior to the match including Mika Garza, Beatrice Formilan, and Emma Shaddix who will playing their final match inside Jenkins Field House.
Junior Mackenzie Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.32 kills per set which ranks her sixth in the SSC. Senior Ali Travis (2.43) is the only other Moc averaging over 2.00 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza has been running the offense from the setter position and is averaging 8.97 assists per set. She currently ranks sixth in the SSC in assists per set. Travis leads a potent serving attack with 38 service aces while Garza (32), Formilan (24) and Shaddix (21) each have 20-plus. The Mocs as a team rank third in the SSC in service aces per set at 1.68 only trailing Eckerd (1.79) and Nova Southeastern (1.74).
Formilan leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.96 digs per set this season to rank second in the SSC. At the net, it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 77 total blocks. She is averaging 0.82 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in the top five are senior Jana Gilic (64), Shaddix (59), Travis (33) and Petermann (31).
Barry has lwon four-straight and faces nationally-ranked Tampa on the road Friday night before visiting Lakeland on Saturday. The Buccaneers currently are top of the table in the Sunshine State Conference.
Sophomore Diana Akopova leads the Bucs, the SSC and the entire NCAA Division II with 5.60 kills per set while senior Djuly Schmorantz is second on the team at 2.89 kills per set. Senior Marija Borcic has been running the offense at setter and is averaging an SSC-best 11.10 assists per set. Borcic also leads from the service line with 36 aces in 2022 while Schmorantz (20) and Akopova (20) rank tied for second on the team.
Defensively, sophomore Luana Bulara leads the backline with 4.06 digs per set. Sophomore Jeyhlen Thomas leads at the net with 110 blocks for an average of 1.22 per set to lead the SSC. Akopova ranks second on the squad with 70 total blocks.
HISTORY: The Mocs and Buccaneers have met 79 times on the volleyball court with the Mocs holding a 41-38 edge in the series. Barry won the most recent meeting which took place earlier this season in Miami Shores, 3-0. The Bucs have won six of the last seven meetings between the two programs including three-straight in Lakeland.
