Mocs Minutes: Women's Basketball Has Busy Thanksgiving Week

  • Florida Southern are currently on a two game win streak as the Mocs earned their first Sunshine State Conference win during their home opener over the weekend. FSC have opened their season 2-1 and are looking to continue that momentum into Thanksgiving week. FSC is opening up the busy week with all non-conference games starting with Lincoln University of Missouri on Tuesday evening.
  • Graduate Student Ashley Shell continues to lead the Mocs scoring 21 points in the SSC opener. The graduate student currently leads the conference, averaging 21.67 points per game through three contests this season. She was joined by three other teammates in double-digit scoring as Arielle Dabu, Maria Llorente, and off the bench Sydney Gomes all helped in the Saturday evening victory. Dabu and Gomes each tacked on 16-points apiece while Llorente put up 10 before getting into foul trouble. Defensively Shell led the way to nine boards followed closely by freshman Na'Haviya Paxton coming down with seven of her own.
  • Shell, Zamora, and Dabu continue to lead the way for the Mocs with 65 points for Shell and 41 points and 25 points for Dabu and Zamora, all three averaging in double figures. From the bench, freshman Gomes is showing dominance as she appeared in every game scoring 27 points so far this season with 11 boards, just behind Shell with 24 and sophomore Anna Denes with 12. Denes is averaging five points a game for a total of 15 in three games.
  • Lincoln University of Missouri is off to Florida for a pair of Thanksgiving-week games vs. non-conference opponents. LU will be in Boca Raton, Fla. on Monday (Nov. 21) to play Lynn. On Tuesday, the Blue Tigers will travel to Lakeland, Fla.to face the Mocs for just their fourth game of the season. Lincoln is 1-1 on the season after getting a split at the Central Region Challenge.
  • The Blue Tigers scored 40 points in the second half to rally from a five-point halftime deficit to win their first game of 2022-23, 67-64, over Arkansas-Monticello in the Central Region Challenge on Friday, Nov. 11. Le'Yanna McGinnis finished with 24 points and seven rebounds while five other LU players each scored eight points. In the final game again Southern Arkansas Lincoln led by five at the end of the first quarter, but Southern Arkansas won a high-scoring game on Saturday, Nov. 12 by a final of 100-89. Le'Yanna McGinnis had 25 points and seven rebounds to lead the Blue Tigers, and Kelsey Mitchell finished with 15 points, four boards and two steals while AJ Bradley scored 18 & Ayreona Carter had 12 points.
  • Lincoln is led by Le'Yanna McGinnis, who averaged 24.5 points and 7.0 rebounds in LU's first two games of the season. Also averaging double digit points for LU is Kelsey Mitchell with 11.5 per contest, followed by AJ Bradley with 9.5 per game. Niyah Jackson has dished a team-high seven assists.
  • HISTORY: This will be the first meeting between FSC and Lincoln.
  • Puerto Rico - Mayaguez has started the season with back-to-back losses as they fell to Winona State 64-46 on November 11 before taking on UT Tyler with a 84-50 loss on November 15. In 2018 the Mocs made history against Puerto Rico - Mayaguez with the most points scored in a period scoring 35 points in the first and 40 in the second.
  • Puerto Rico - Mayaguez is led by Vianca Malave and Andrea Mendez who both scored in double digits to lead the team against Winona State. Malave put up 14 points and six boards, followed by Mendez with 11 points and a board.
  • Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras The team has started out 0-2 falling to Winona State 62-54 on November 13. UT Tyler in a 83-57 battle at home in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on November 17. The team has started out 0-2 falling The Mocs last faced Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras in 2002 when they hosted the Cardinals with a 97-50 victory.
