Mocs Minutes: Crossover in Full Swing, Six Teams in Action this Weekend

  • Florida Southern will have their home opener to face #10 Lynn University on Friday and #1 Barry on Sunday. The Mocs are fresh off a YTF Invitational, hosted by Tampa, this past weekend. Vivien Charvatova and Olivia Bryant led the Mocs with two event wins each over the three-day event. Other winners included Mathilda Vidgren, Eve Robinson, and Minnie Kim.
  • Coach Trish Riddell emphasized the importance of winning doubles events to start the spring season as the Mocs had three pairings with event wins in doubles competition at Tampa. Florida Southern is excited for the full spring schedule and early battles with top-ranked conference opponents.
  • Lynn is tied for tenth in the latest ITA Coaches Poll and won their season opener in a 7-0 sweep against Florida National last week. The Fighting Knights are led by Giorgia Pigato, the 23rd- ranked player in the nation. They also return six players from last year's squad as well as two newcomers Zofia Podbiol and Jacqueline Wagner, who each had an event win in their Lynn debut. Only one of their games against Florida National went to a tiebreaker in the match.
  • Barry enters as defending Division II National Champions to host the Mocs in their fourth match of the season. Barry had back-to-back 7-0 match wins against Flagler and Florida National over the last week. They host Rollins on Saturday, before the Sunday bout with the Mocs. The Bucs are led by Deniz Khazan, the top ranked singles player according to ITA Division II National Rankings. On Monday Helene Scholsen was named the SSC Women's Player of the Week.

  • Florida Southern opened the 2022 season with a close battle against No. 10 West Florida last weekend. The Mocs split the doubleheader (6-1, 3-5) on opening day, before a 6-1 loss on Sunday to give the Argos the series win. The first win of the season was a 6-1 victory over the Argos built by two 3-run homers by Jared DeSantolo and Jeff Liquori. The winning pitcher was Nathan Madej, who was recently named the SSC and NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week.
  • The Mocs, registering votes in the NCBWA Preseason Poll, registered a home run in each of the first three games of the season. DeSantolo is second in the SSC in slugging percentage (1.500) and tied with NCBWA National Player of the Week Duncan Pastore, with two home runs in three games.
  • USC Aiken split their series with UNC Pembroke after a 2-0 loss in game one and a 5-3 win for game two. Trailing 3-0 in game two, the Pacers bounced back with a two-run homer by Nick Tripp to propel five unanswered runs and comeback win. Tripp leads USC Aiken with a .333 batting average and two RBIs.
  • On the mound the Pacers have Joel Haney and Luke Parker with five strikeouts each. Peyton Boozer has the sole pitching win as Austin Sandifer appeared as well to have a 6.00 ERA. This will be the Pacers first home game of the season.
  • Eckerd won their season opening series against Georgia Southwestern State University last weekend. A non-conference matchup against the Mocs was originally planned for February 8th, but was postponed to February 15th due to weather conditions. The Tritons split their opening doubleheader against the Canes (6-0, 1-9) and a 7-1 series winner on February 6th.
  • Eckerd is led by Gunner Womer with a .333 batting average as Tyler Cox has three runs and two RBIs. Infielder has four RBIs so far this season. On the mound Eckerd has Brendan Lawry with a 1.50 ERA as Jacob Stipp leads the Tritons with nine strikeouts to start the year. The Tritons will face Georgia College at home this weekend before the game against the Mocs.

  • No. 20 Florida Southern men's lacrosse opened the 2022 season with back-to-back road victories at Anderson and Catawba. The Moccasins outscored their opponents 44-17 and opened a season 2-0 for the first time in program history. The back-to-back 20-plus goal performances marked the second time in program history the Mocs have scored over 20 goals in back-to-back games. Junior Jeff Atlas and senior Kevin Horwitz were named Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player and Specialist of the Week, respectively, for their efforts.
  • Junior Sean Nolan currently leads the SSC in goals (7) and goals per game (3.5) while Atlas leads the league in assists (9), assists per game (4.50), points (15) and points per game (7.50). Along with Nolan, the Mocs have the top four goal scorers in the league so far this season while also holding three of the top four spots in points per game. Horwitz has over double his next highest counterpart in ground balls per game in the SSC at 12.5 compared to second place Ethan Tosheff of Florida Tech with six. His 83.3 faceoff win percentage is tops in the nation so far this season as well as his 12.5 groundballs per game average.
  • Horwitz cemented his name in the Florida Southern record book last weekend as he tied a single game record versus Anderson while also breaking the career mark for faceoffs won by a Moc. Horwitz picked up 40 faceoff victories in 48 attempts over the weekend. He was 24 of 28 versus Anderson to move his career faceoff victories to 586 surpassing Dan Krispinsky's (2011-14) record of 576. Horwitz also picked up a single-game record-tying 15 groundballs in the victory. The 15 groundballs tied the previous record held by Krispinsky, which he set in 2013. Horwitz now holds three of the top four single game groundball performances at Florida Southern. His 24 faceoff wins also rank third in single game program history.
  • No. 3 Tampa opened the season on the road at then 17th-ranked Lynn and won in dominating fashion, 15-3. The Spartans led 7-1 after the first quarter and never looked back eventually taking a 9-2 lead into halftime.
  • Junior Daniel Fitzpatrick and senior Owen Miller lead the Spartan attack with three goals each. Fitzpatrick added an assist to lead the team in points with four. Seven others found the back of the net against the Fighting Knights. Junior goalkeeper Blake Ulmer was named SSC Goalkeeper of the Week for his performance against Lynn. He picked up 14 saves while allowing three goals for an 82.4 save percentage.
  • HISTORY Tampa holds a commanding 14-1 lead in the all-time series between the two teams with the lone Florida Southern victory coming in 2012. The Mocs defeated Tampa on the road 11-7 on April 12, 2012. Tampa has won 13-straight including six-straight in Lakeland.

  • Florida Southern has started the season off hot going undefeated during the Flagler tournament to open up the 2022 season, but a tough battle at home gave the Mocs their first loss of the season when they split against visiting Flagler on Wednesday.
  • On the season, senior Jadin Dewith is leading the way after her performance against Flagler in the home-opener as she went 4-for-5 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Transfer Myah Moy is batting a .412 with seven hits on the season, a double, and three RBIs. Freshman Destiny Colgate is leading the FSC with runners batted in bringing four in and the only Moc to hit a homer so far this season. In the circle, Lane Edgington earned her first win against Flagler, pitching a complete game with just one run on four hits.
  • Davis & Elkins started their season last weekend as well with a doubleheader against Wingate where they fell in both with a shutout in game one and 7-8 in the final game. The Senators are led by Kailynn Parks with a .429 batting average going 3-for-7 and one run scored.
  • Texas A&M Commerce opened up their season first with a split against No. 2 Augustana when the Lions home opener was a 4-3 win over Augustana in 10 innings that ended in a walkoff. Texas A&M Commerce are currently on a four game winning streak going undefeated at the Arkansas Tech Winter Invitational. Avery Boley is averaging a .389 from the plate going 7-for-18 with seven RBIs and a home run.
  • North Georgia begin their season last weekend when they split the weekend at the Gulf Shores Invitational. The Nighthawks opened up with an 11-1 five innings win against Delta State but later fell 17-6 to Mississippi College. To close out the invite North Georgia defeated No. 17 West Florida 4-1, before falling to No. 7 Valdosta State 3-1 during the nightcap. On the season, the Nighthawks are led by Madison Simmons supporting a .500 batting average going 4-for-8 with two doubles and two runs scored bringing in four runners.

  • Florida Southern The Mocs took down No. 1 in the Sunshine State Conference Tampa who is also ranked #14/19 in the NCAA polls. FSC defeated the Spartans with a 66-41 decision that was led by junior Mackenzie Steele who has been on fire from the 3-point arc going 5-10 from the arc for a total of 21 points. Graduate Students, Whitney Jacob and Julia Jenike also finished in double-digit scoring per usual as Jacob tallied 17 points followed by 11 for Jenike. Defensively, Jenike grabbed eight boards along with Ashley Shell with seven of her own.
  • On the season, On the season, graduate students Julia Jenike and Whitney Jacob are both sitting in the top of the conference standings in scoring. Jacob jumped from fourth to second in the SSC averaging 16.9 points per game and Jenike is currently fourth for a 15.1 average.
  • In conference play, Florida Southern moved to second in the conference for their offensive performances and sits third defensively averaging 69.4 points per game. However, the Mocs are the No. 1 team from the 3-pointer with 141 threes made in 361 attempts for a .391 average; averaging 8.8 per game.
  • Nova Southeastern just saw their two game winning streak come to an end when they fell to Saint Leo Wednesday in a 78-87 battle at Saint Leo. The Sharks were led by graduate student Grace Gilmore for a season-high of 25 points. That was followed by three more Nova Southeastern players finishing in double-digit scoring.
  • On the season, On the season, Nova is shooting a .409 from the field and a .315 from beyond the arc. Hailey Conley is leading NSU averaging 16.4 points per game followed by McKenah Peters (15.9) and Grace Gilmore (13.0) for double-digit scoring.
  • In conference play, The Sharks are currently sitting in sixth place in the SSC and are third in conference play with offense averaging 67.9 points per game just under FSC's 69.4 points per game.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern and Nova Southeastern's last meet up decided by a nine-point win at FSC. This is the teams 46th meeting where the Mocs hold the most wins with 25 and 11-11 on the road record.

  • Florida Southern heads to Fort Lauderdale to tango with the no. 1 team in the nation, Nova Southeastern after defeating Tampa, 83-80 Wednesday night. The Moccasins saw five players score in double-figures led by Jadin Booth's 18 points off the bench.
  • On the season, the Mocs continue to improve the overall points per game (ppg) as a team, now at 80.7 ppg. E.J. Dambreville holds the top spot in points a game at 14.5 while he also leads the team in rebounding at 9.8, 215 on the year. Xavier Rhodes (13.9 ppg), Jack Casale (12.6 ppg), and Tarik Mckelphin (12.1 ppg) join Dambreville in double-figure averages.
  • In conference play, FSC averages 81 points a game as a team and are led by Dambreville who scores 15.9 ppg. Rhodes (13.9 ppg), Casale (11.9 ppg), and Mckelphin (11.4 ppg) round out the double-digit averages in SSC play. Jadin Booth and Luke Anderson are on the cusp at 8.9 and 8.5 a game, respectively.
  • Nova Southeastern moved to number one in the country and is on a 21-game win streak. The Sharks claimed win number 21 Wednesday 91-74 on the road at Saint Leo where Sekou Sylla paced the team with a game-high 26 points. RJ Sunahara added 21 points with Eddie Puisis (16), Nick Smith and Shane Hunter tallying 11.
  • On the year, the Sharks average 98.3 points a game as Sylla leads the team with 22.9 ppg. Sunahara averages 19.4 ppg, second on the team, as Puisis and Smith are over double-figure averages at 15.2 and 11.8, respectively. Sylla is the team leader in rebounds and rebounds per game at 200 and 9.5.
  • In league play, Nova Southeastern's average slips to 94.5 points a game while Sylla slides to 22.7 ppg and 9.3 rebounds per game as Sunahara improves to 18.5 ppg. Puisis (15.3) and Smith (11.3) round out the double-digit averages in conference play.
  • History Florida Southern holds a 32-10 advantage over Nova Southeastern and was the last team to defeat the Sharks. NSU sat out the 2020-21 season due to CoVID-19 and its last loss was March 8, 118-109 in Lakeland, Fla. in the Sunshine State Conference tournament. The Sharks are currently riding a 21-game win streak which includes the first meeting earlier this year in Lakeland on Jan. 15 where NSU won 83-73 as the third-ranked team in the country. The two teams slugged it out with both leading scorers over 25 points in the game. Sylla led with a game-high 28 points and 10 rebounds for the Sharks as Mckelphin battled with a team-high 26 points.
