HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Despite splitting today's doubleheader, the Florida Southern College baseball team wins their three-game series against the University of Alabama in Huntsville at Charger Park.
The Mocs (13-10, 4-2 SSC) won game one in a 9-5 score, including back-to-back home runs by
Ahmad Fitts and
Tor Sehnert. The Chargers (7-15, 2-6 GSC) took a big lead in the third inning of game two and held on for a 7-2 win. The Mocs won game one in a 19-5 rout and 2-1 series win.
GAME ONE: 9-5 W
Florida Southern took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first after
Connor Berry singled through the left side and brought
Jared DeSantolo and
Jeff Liquori home. The Chargers responded in the next series with a solo homer by Ezzell to narrow the Moccasin lead to one. An RBI double by
Nathan Chevalier extended the Mocs lead to two, but UAH scored three runs in the second to retake the lead.
Both teams were scoreless in the third inning before the Mocs went on a scoring run which began in the fourth with Chevalier with an RBI sacrifice fly and double by
Duncan Hunter for a 5-4 lead for the Mocs. Neither team earned runs for the next two innings to end to the top of the seventh. Florida Southern advanced the score with an RBI single by Berry and back-to-back home runs for the second consecutive game. Fitts homered first with a 2 RBI rocket to right center, which Sehnert matched in left field.
With a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the seventh, the Chargers managed an RBI double to cut the deficit to four, but the Mocs held on with pitching by
Logan Verrino and
Collin Camarigg. The win for the Mocs went to
Aric McAtee, for his second win of the season and six strikeouts in five innings. The loss for the Chargers went to Connor Brooks. Hunter had two hits in the game to extend his hit streak to 20 games.
GAME TWO: 7-2 L
The Mocs took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two, taking advantage of consecutive wild pitches by the Chargers. UAH tied the game after a two-run homer by Ezzell, who also had a homer in game one to start the game. With a tie game after one inning, the Mocs were unable to score as UAH continued to score over the next two innings.
The Chargers had an RBI double by Villalta to take the lead in the top of the second, and never relinquished the advantage for the rest of the game. Turner had an RBI single in the third, with a wild pitch advancement to bost the score and set up a two RBI single and 7-2 UAH lead in the bottom of the third. The Mocs were held to just one hit over the next four innings, as the Chargers hold on for the 7-2 win in seven innings.
Despite the game two loss today, the Mocs improved to 13-10 on the season and won their series against the Chargers. A team-high 20-game hit streak by Hunter came to an end in game two today as he was unable to tally a hit. Liquori,
Seth Cannady, Berry, and
Tilden Agee each tallied a hit for game two.

The Mocs return to conference play with a three-game series against Eckerd College at home, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. at Henley Field.
