#6 Mocs Win Fourth Straight, Defeat Chargers in First Meeting

LAKELAND, Fla. - The sixth-ranked Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team won their fourth straight game on Friday night, defeating the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers by a score of 18-8 at Berend Field.
 
Brittany Iamele started in goal for the third consecutive game, and earned the win in conjunction with Patricia Werker, as the two combined for a .500 save percentage. On the other end of the field, the Moccasins (5-1) peppered the Chargers (3-6) with 23 shots on goal to overcome a tenacious effort from the visitors in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
 
Abby McFerren continued her torrid pace, leading the team with five goals. The sophomore has 22 points in her last four games, with 27 on the season.
 
It was McFerren who started the scoring for the Mocs, lighting the initial match in what wound up being a 9-goal first quarter. Marlee Moon Gaddy and Hailey Daleo each notched a pair of goals, while Katie Yeagle, Brenna Smith, and Hannah Hale each scored to give Florida Southern a 9-1 lead at the end of the first.
 
The second quarter leaned in favor of the visitors, as UAH was able to cut the deficit to seven despite a pair of goals from Daleo and McFerren. The Moccasins still took an 11-4 lead into the half.
 
Lizzy Lynch came alive in the third quarter, scoring three goals in the frame to give the Mocs some insurance down the stretch. Lynch finished the night with three goals and four assists in her impressive return to play after missing a pair of games.
 
McFerren and Daleo each tacked on another goal in the period to head into the fourth leading 16-5.
 
Alabama-Huntsville was able to put together a competitive final quarter, scoring three goals, including a strike from Graduate Student Cara Brown, who notched four goals in the game.
 
Smith and McFerren both scored a goal in the final frame as well, pushing the Mocs to an 18-8 victory by the end of the night.
 
As a team, the Mocs garnered 11 assists, and played well defensively. Freshman Reese Colwell stood out, leading the team with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while the Mocs goaltenders continued to be reliable.
 
The last game of the opening home stand for the No. 6 ranked Moccasins will be this Sunday, at 1:00 p.m. against the visiting Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.
