Mocs Minutes: Busy Spring Break Week Continues for FSC Athletics

  • No. 6 Florida Southern welcomes Wingate to Berend Field after the Moccasins picked up two big victories over the weekend with a 20-4 win over Findlay and a 21-7 rout of then-no. 19 Mount Olive. In the win over the Trojans, Madison Tare and Ellie Griffin led a group of 13 scorers with three goals apiece while Abby McFerren played a key role in setting up goals with five assists as the main facilitator. McFerren finished with six points with one goal added to her stat line.
  • On the season, Lizzy Lynch and McFerren lead the Mocs in points with 14 total with Lynch at eight goals, six assists, and McFerren at seven goals and seven assists. Ellie Griffin, Brenna Smith, and Hailey Daleo are all tied for third with 10 points apiece. Griffin on 10 goals, Smith on nine goals, and Daleo on eight goals and two assists.
  • In goal, Patricia Werker is 2-1 on the season with 150 minutes played allowing 29 goals with 20 stops. Brittany Iamele is 1-0 on the young season in 63:43 minutes of action with just three goals allowed and nine saves. Both Sydney O'Neill and Rylie Rittberg saw action over the weekend, and both picked up saves against the 19th-ranked Mount Olive Trojans.
  • RV Wingate enters the game undefeated, 5-0, after knocking off Palm Beach Atlantic on Monday, 18-7. The highlight win on the season thus far was a 12-11 win over then-no. 16 Limestone on March 5. In the win over the Sailfish, Leah Knowles led the team with five goals while Bella Pellet added three, Avery Scherer and Kaleigh Wilgeroth two each.
  • On the season, Knowles leads the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 goals in five games while Becca Ruiz is second with 12. Both are the team leaders in points as well as Knowles leads overall with 27 points (18 goals, 9 assists), while Ruis is second with 15 points.
  • In goal, Megan Biase has played 210 minutes and is 4-0 with 28 goals against and has 25 saves. Emily Rango has played 59:59 between the pipes and is 1-0 with eight saves. Riley Boone has also saw 30 minutes of action and has five saves.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 2-0 against Wingate all-time with a win at home and a win on the road. In the last meeting, in 2020, the Mocs defeated the Bulldogs 19-7. In the first meeting, in 2019, FSC defeated Wingate 20-7 in Wingate, N.C.

  • Florida Southern finishes their seven-game home streak with a mid-week game against Seton Hill. The Mocs went undefeated in their two-game series against Kentucky Wesleyan last week, including a five-inning performance by Andrew Williamson where he had 11 strikeouts. Florida Southern won a 13-4 game against Winona State on Friday before losing a three-game series against Augustana this past weekend. Ahmad Fitts led the Mocs in RBI this week, tallying nine RBI and two triples over five games. Fitts had three RBI in the 13-4 win over Winona State.
  • On the season, Florida Southern is led by Duncan Hunter with a batting average of .392 in a 17-game hit streak. Jeff Liquori has the advantage in RBI, 19 on the season, with Hunter right behind with 18. Liquori is second in the conference in home runs, hitting seven beyond the fence this year, and tied for third in total runs score, with 23.
  • On the mound, the Mocs continue to rotate pitching rotations, with Aric McAtee seeing quite a bit of action this past week. Other starters included Logan Verrino and Brant Brown. The Mocs have a combined 4.50 ERA on the season, with Williamson's 11 strikeouts a new team-high.
  • No. 11 Seton Hill enters with a 6-2 overall record, with a loss their lat time out against No. 3 Tampa. The Griffins won two straight games against Winona State and Ashland University to start their spring break trip but lost to Tampa 9-2. Seton Hill had an early 7-0 deficit heading into the seventh inning, before the Griffins score two straight. The Spartans held on for the 9-2 win as Tampa had just seven hits and two homers.
  • Seton Hill is led by Owen Sabol with a .414 batting average with Drew Garth right behind batting .409 on the season. Garth leads the team with RBI with 10 so far and the team sending 12 home runs. On the mound the Griffins rely on Kevin Vaupel who leads with 13 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.46. As a team, Seton Hill averages 4.08 ERA and has only given up three home runs on the season.
  • UAH host Florida Southern after a 6-12 start to the season. The Chargers lost their last series 3-0 against Delta State by a combined score 36-9. A member of the Gulf South, the Chargers will go up against Miles before hosting the Mocs this weekend.
  • On the season, the Chargers have five players batting over .300 on the season, with Jackson Lindsey leading the pack with a .354 average in all 18 games. As a team, the Chargers have hit 16 home runs and have six players with double-digit RBI. Despite giving up an average 6.70 runs a game as a team, a starting rotation of Connor Brooks, Kody Keiser, and Tyler Self each have over 20 innings pitched and over 100 at-bats.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have faced Alabama-Huntsville just three times, with the 2-1 advantage to UAH. The last meeting between the two teams was back in 2014 with the Mocs winning 7-2 in the NCAA DII South Regional Tournament where the Mocs were runner-up in the South Regional. The matchup against Seton Hill will be the first ever meeting between the two teams.

  • Florida Southern has been on a bye for nine days and are ready to get back into action with a non-conference matchup. The Mocs started their season off hot with a 6-1 start but have recently been searching for a seventh win as they are on an eight game drought.
  • In conference play the Mocs are still looking for their first win hoping it comes this weekend against No. 11 Tampa on Saturday. FSC are currently sitting fourth in the SSC with batting averages with a .278 as the top average is just a .296 from PBA. Jadin Dewith is currently leading the conference in hitting, supporting a .556 batting average going 10-for-18 with three runs scored, one double, and an RBI.
  • On the season, seniors Myah Moy and Jadin Dewith are leading the way. Both have started in every game for FSC as Dewith is 20-for-41 on the season followed by Moy going 20-for-51 with a .488 batting average and .392. Freshman Destiny Colgate is still the lone Moc with a homer on the season but brings in 10 runners on six doubles.
  • Minnesota Duluth is currently supporting a 13-4 record but has fallen in their past two games, which was against No. 11 Tampa on Tuesday with both scores being 1-0. The Bulldogs have not played at home yet this season as they are on a Florida road trip seeing action against three SSC schools over the course of the weekend. Four Bulldogs are hitting in the .300 as Kiana Bender leads the pack with a .345, followed by Jordyn Thomas (.339), Emma Frost (.326), and Kat Burkhardt (.302).
  • No. 11 Tampa is currently on a two game win streak after recently defeating Minnesota- Duluth in 1-0 fashion the first game of the double header being a nine inning game won on a walk off and followed with a shutout that was won with another 1-0 decision.
  • The Spartans are led by freshman Mariah Galhouse in all categories with a .338 batting average, 23 hits, three doubles, one homer, and nine RBIs. She also just recently had a shutout against the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth pitching seven complete games with five wins, five losses and two saves. Leading Tampa with 38 strikeouts for 63.0 innings pitched.
  • Bloomsburg has opened up their season on the road with a 6-2 start to their season. They are currently on a four game win streak which has not seen action in any conference opponents since their start on February 19 against Mercy College with a 6-3 win. The Huskies are set to open up action in Florida against three SSC schools as they will face Eckerd for a doubleheader on Sunday.
  • Bloomsburg is being led by Nicolette Ray and Danielle Barnes who are batting .500 on the young year. Ray is 13-for-26 with nine runs scored, six doubles, one homer and nine runs batted in. Barnes has 11 hits in 22 at bats, five runs, one double and tying Ray with nine runs batted in as well.

  • Florida Southern has started off undefeated this season defeating Lake Sumter Community College back on February 9. It has been almost an entire month since the Mocs have competed against another school and the Mocs captured two more wins for their resume with 3-2 records against State College of Florida over the weekend.
  • On the season, the Mocs are being led by seniors Haley Goodrich and Kennedy Mathews in the No. 1 slot and then Celia-Rae Creco and Erica Ronder in the No. 2. Both teams saw their first losses against State College of Florida but look to bounce back after the tri-match against College of Charleston and Saint Leo.
  • The remaining teams stand undefeated still as Abby Knoop and Bethany Jones took down State College of Florida in three sets in game one followed by two sets in game two. The teams of Sarah Crocker/ Olivia D'Agostino and Hayley St. Martin/ Curry Ward also remain undefeated defeating the SCF in straight sets in both games.
  • LaGrange has started off the season with a 0-3 start in early February and since has had to cancel the remaining of their games. The Panthers have fallen to St. Andrews in the season opener 1-4 and then to Tusculum and Lincolin Memorial in straight matches 0-5. The one win on the season for LaGrange comes in from their No. 1 seed Jharia Harris and Bailey Moss who won in three sets with scores of 14-21, 21-12, 15-9.
  • Spartanburg Methodist The Pioneers have started off their season hot defeating NAIA opponent Truett McConnell on March 5 with a 3-2 score. SMU swept in the first three seeds as No. 1 and No. 2 went straight sets with a 21-13, 21-11 in the one slot and 21-17, 21-17 in the two slots. In the three the Pioneers took down the Bears in three sets with scores of 21-15, 21-13, and 16-14.
  • Huntingdon has started out their season with a 3-9 start, winning the first two before going on a nine-game losing streak to see that come to an end at the Gulf Shores Bash against Berry with a 5-0 decision.
  • Berry beach volleyball team kicked off its inaugural season Friday and Saturday in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the Spring Hill Beach Bash. On day one, the Vikings faced William Carey, falling 5-0 in the first match.The second match of day two the Vikings won their first sets and matches but ultimately fell in the duel, 3-2, to Mobile. Hannah Hulsman and Peyton Breissinger etched their names into the Berry record books by winning the first match of a duel in school history in two sets.Vikings fell to Hendrix 5-0 playing their fourth matches in two days, BC fell to Tusculum in the second set of matches.Competing in their final match of the event, the Vikings would go against another established D-III program in Huntingdon, falling 5-0.
  • Oklahoma Wesleyan just recently started their season on March 2 as the Lady Eagles fell to Stephen F. Austin in straight matches for a 5-0 start. They would get their first win of the season when they faced Cedar Valley having to battle for the 3-2 win. The final contest the Oklahoma Wesleyan Lady Eagles have seen was another 5-0 loss that was against Nebraska in a dual.
  • Saint Leo split on the final day of the Battle of the Bay. The Lions dropped a 4-1 decision to Tampa followed by a 4-1 win over the tournament hosts, Eckerd. The day's results moved the Green and Gold's overall record to 6-6. Clare Flanagan and Brenna Reinhard registered their fifth win together defeating the Spartan's fourth pair. The duo finished back-to-back long battles in order to bring home a 21-19, 21-19 win. In match two against Eckerd, Saint Leo cruised to victory seeing wins at the first, second, third, and fifth pairings. Fifth pairings, Elizabeth Sandoval and Amanda Doherty flexed on their opponents 21-8, 21-7. Meanwhile, the second pair, Aliya Fredette-Huffman and LeeAnn Potter topped the Tritons 21-8, 21-9.

  • #21/19 Florida Southern returns to action after placing fifth at the Lady Mocs Classic on Feb. 21-22 with a team score of 890 (+26). The Moccasins were led by Loren Perez who finished in 19th at six-over 222. Perez carded rounds of 77, 70, 75, to finish a stroke ahead of teammate Nathalie Svensson, 223 (+7). Svensson tallied scored of 76, 77, 70 for the 54-hole event at Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
  • A year ago at the Peggy Kirk Bell Memorial, the Mocs placed fifth out of 12 teams. Nathalie Svensson paced the team with a 14th place finish with a three-round score of 237. Lacey Tucker was second on the team at 241 while Loren Perez finished just behind at 242. Tucker finished in 19th place as Perez finished in 23rd of the 66-player field.
  • After back-to-back top-10 finishes to open the spring, the Moccasins entered the national rankings on Feb. 25 in the Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll in 21st place and are 19th in the Golf Stat rankings.

  • #15 Florida Southern suffered a tough 13-9 defeat at the hands of 14th-ranked Lindenwood this past Monday. The loss was the third of the season for the Moccasins although all three losses have come against top-15 ranked opponents.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points with 40 as he has 18 goals along with a team-best 22 assists. Junior Sean Nolan has paced the Mocs in scoring with 21 goals followed closely by sophomore Thomas Frank who has netted 20 goals this season. Junior Jay Minor joins Nolan, Frank and Atlas in double-digit goals with 12.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 71.3 percent of his face offs (129-181) this season including a 77.1 percent clip (81-105) in Florida Southern victories.
  • In goal for the Mocs it has been a two-headed attack with junior Maxwell Freestone and freshman Michael Simone splitting time so far this season. Freestone has a 10.83 goals against average with 34 saves to go along with a 2-2 record. Simone has a 12.04 GAA with 34 saves and a 2-1 record. Freestone currently has just over 15 minutes more action in goal than Simone this season.
  • #1 Le Moyne is 3-0 so far this season with wins over #2 Wingate, #7 Mercyhurst and #5 Mercy. The Dolphins defeated Wingate 15-11, Mercyhurst 10-9 and Mercy 8-7. The Dolphins play Roberts Wesleyan this Wednesday before heading to Florida to take on the Mocs.
  • The Dolphins are coming of an incredible 2021 season in which they captured the NCAA Division II National Championship while posting a perfect 15-0 record. The last loss for the Dolphins came on May 18, 2019 in the NCAA Division II National Championship Semifinals in which they fell 15-14 in overtime to Merrimack.
  • Graduate student Carter Collins leads the Dolphins this season in goals (8), assists (4) and points (12). Collins is a returning USILA All-American who spent the previous four years at Lindenwood. Graduate student Ben McCreary and senior Kevin Sheehan are tied for second on the team in goals with six while redshirt senior Zach Pierce sits in fourth with five goals on the year. Senior Sam Kury handles the face off duties and has won 54.4 percent of his attempts (37-68). In goal redshirt senior Frank Delia holds down the spot having seen all 180 minutes of action this season with 43 saves and a 9.00 goals against average.
  • HISTORY: This Monday will mark the second meeting between the Mocs and Dolphins all-time. Le Moyne holds the 1-0 advantage after a 11-6 victory over FSC in 2018 in Syracuse, N.Y. The Dolphins were ranked second in the country at the time of the first meeting.

  • Florida Southern went undefeated during the spring break trip to Hilton Head and are riding a six-game winning streak after their 6-1 win over Northwood Tuesday afternoon. The Mocs battled the heat as they won their doubles point and five of the singles flights. A close match on court one went to the Wolves in three sets, but the Mocs continued to win with three set victories by Isabella Bolivar and Maxima Ellenberg. Flor Salerno won her flight with Olivia Bryant sweeping her opponent 6-0, 6-0. On court two, Minnie Kim won by retirement of her opponent in three sets.
  • Connecticut will travel to Lakeland to face Division II opponent Florida Southern next Tuesday in the first ever meeting between the two teams. The Huskies enter 5-3 on the season and a three-game winning streak. UCONN won their last match in a 5-2 win over Quinnipiac with four of the singles flights going their way. Caroline Cook, Isabel Petri Bere Julieanne Bou, and Leonie Hoppe were the singles flight winners.
  • HISTORY: This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.

  • Florida Southern continued their hot streak with a 4-1 win over Northwood University Tuesday afternoon. The Mocs remain undefeated at home and are on a five-game winning streak. A pairing of Valentin Hertweck and Brian Pham won their doubles set alongside Oscar Sohl and Erik Nordblom. Match wins went to Elliott Altman, Hertweck and Nordblom. With the match already decided, two singles flights and a doubles flight went unfinished.
  • Augustana are in Orlando to face several teams on their spring break trip. The Vikings are 4-6 on the season and will face SSC conference opponent Embry-Riddle before taking on FSC at the USTA Campus in Orlando. The Vikings won their first Orlando match with a 6-1 win over Stonehill College before a 5-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic. In their first match, the Vikings won each of their singles flight after giving up the doubles point. Joseph Plachy, Cade Damgaard, Nicholas LaPoint, Tyson Cowger, Henry Dorbusch, and Justin Karcher were the singles flight winners.
  • Delta State is fresh off back-to-back Gulf South Conference with a 5-2 win over Mississippi College and 6-1 win over Christian Brothers. Despite losing the doubles point against Mississippi College, the Statesmen rebounded for five singles flight wins by Franco Roldan, Emiliano Elizarraraz, Come Bracaval, Hugo Stroppiana, and Emile Le Terrier.
  • Hillsdale has won two matches in a row in a 4-3 win over Northwood and a 4-3 win over Lake Superior State. The Chargers face Saint Leo before taking on the Mocs next Monday. Hillsdale won the doubles point in their match against Lake Superior State, but things were close as they lost three of the singles flights. Brennan Cimpeanu, Sean Barstow, and Daniel Gilbert were the Chargers singles winners.
  • Quincy faces Lewis & Clark Community College before their trip to Orlando where they will take on Saint Thomas Aquinas College and Florida Southern at the USTA Campus. Last time out the Hawks lost their match against Maryville University in a 6-1 decision. Ettore Pavesi was the sole singles winner for Quincy. However, the match previous was a 4-3 win for the Hawks against Missouri Baptist University. Quincy won the doubles point and were led by Pablo Mateos Niela, Erik Weiler, and Francisco Nique in singles.
