Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#10 Mocs Season Comes to Close with Loss to #1 Queens in the NCAA Second Round

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The No. 10 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team saw their season end on Sunday against the top-ranked team in the country, Queens University of Charlotte, in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship.

Florida Southern qualified for the tournament as the second seed in the south region after winning the Sunshine State Conference tournament with a win over the University of Tampa.

Queens beat Tampa on Friday afternoon to advance to the second-round matchup with Florida Southern, which beat Wingate in the first round to set up the huge matchup on Sunday afternoon.

Patricia Werker started in the net for the Moccasins, making seven total saves as the Royals fired 32 shots, maintaining a constant offensive attack.

Abby McFerren paced the Moccasin attack with five goals while she finished with six total points adding one assist. Hailey Daleo notched three goals ahead of Lizzy Lynch's two goals. Three other FSC players notched a goal in the game with Madison Tare, Ellie Griffin, and Sammy Gorrasi finding the back of the net.

Florida Southern came out on fire, scoring the first three goals of the game to put the team up early. Madison Tare, Lizzy Lynch, and Sammy Gorrasi each tallied as the Mocs took a 3-0 lead at the midpoint of the first quarter.

Queens got one back in the late stages of the period, but Abby McFerren responded 28 seconds later, as the Moccasins held a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Hailey Daleo became the fifth unique goal scorer for Florida Southern in the opening minute of the second quarter, giving her team a four-goal lead. The teams would exchange goals for the remainder of the frame, and the Mocs took an 8-5 lead into the half.

Queens opened the scoring in the second half, but again the two squads exchanged tallies, with Florida Southern holding a 10-7 lead near the midpoint of the third quarter. That would be the last lead that they held in the game.

The Royals rattled off five straight scores to take their first lead of the game in the early stages of the fourth quarter. McFerren pulled the Moccasins back within one before Queens scored again to take a two-goal lead, 13-11.

McFerren and Ellie Griffin scored again for Florida Southern, but the offense was unable to overcome a late goal-scoring streak from the Royals, as time ran out with the home team leading, 16-13.

Queens continues to be undefeated on the season, moving to 21-0 on the year. Florida Southern will finish the year with a record of 16-4, and the 2022 Sunshine State Conference Tournament Champions.

The Royals will continue their quest for the institution's first Division 2 Women's Lacrosse Championship on May 20 at 5 p.m. against East Stroudsburg in the semifinals, before the Royals transition to Division I starting July 1.
