HURRICANE IAN

SEPTEMBER 29, 2022
12:45 PM

First and foremost, we hope this email finds you and your loved ones safe from Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Southwest Florida yesterday morning and brought winds up to 155 miles an hour. The storm will continue to move northeastward throughout the day.

We are glad to report students and staff that remain on campus are safe, and our campus only sustained minor damage.

At this time, however, the following residential communities are without power: Colony Arms Apartments, Lake Morton Apartments, Publix Commons (Buildings 61, 62, and 63), Dell, Miller, and Hollis Halls. Lakeland Electric is on-scene working to restore power.

Students remaining in a building without power can go to Branscomb Auditorium, where they will be comfortable until the power to their community is restored. Anyone on campus that needs assistance is encouraged to call Campus Safety at 863.680.4125.

Wynee's Bistro is open and serving meals.

Recovery crews are on campus assessing the status of other campus facilities. We will be in touch shortly with details about resuming normal business operations.

Students who are experiencing challenges because of the hurricane should notify their instructors. As noted, faculty will provide consideration for assignments and deadlines during this time.

Students should plan to return to campus on Sunday, October 2, with the expectation of resuming classes and activities on Monday, October 3.

We will continue communicating updates via email, social media, and the website.

SEPTEMBER 26, 2022
11:00 PM

We continue to watch Hurricane Ian closely. At this time, we are suspending normal business operations on Wednesday, September 28, and Thursday, September 29.

Students who plan to leave campus should inform the College by logging on to the FSC Portal and completely the Hurricane Ian Plan. The form can be found on the Students Tab on the Community Living page.

With some students remaining on campus, we will require staff to be in place to care for them. Only FSC employees classified as essential personnel and/or staff identified by their supervisors as vital to campus operations should report to work. Employees should check with their supervisors to confirm their status as essential personnel. Non-essential personnel should not report to work on Wednesday or Thursday.

We will continue monitoring and making announcements as changes occur and more information is available. Current plans are subject to change as the storm progresses.

This morning the College's Emergency Management Team met to discuss the status of Hurricane Ian. Based on the latest information available, we recommend students try to return home, if possible.

For your safety, students that live in college-owned houses need to plan to move into Branscomb auditorium at 5 pm on Tuesday, September 27, and will remain there until the hurricane has passed and the campus is determined to be safe. Food service will be provided, but options will be limited.

In addition, based on weather conditions, students living in any college housing (meaning residence halls and college apartmentsmay be required to relocate to a shelter on campus. They will remain there until the hurricane has passed and the campus is determined to be safe. Food service will be provided, but options on campus will be limited.

As a reminder, the College has canceled all classes between Monday, September 26, and Friday, September 30, allowing students time to travel home if they choose to do so.
