FAIRBANKS, Alaska – After an exhausting five-set thriller to open the Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic, Florida Southern College volleyball dropped its second match of the tournament to host, Alaska Fairbanks 3-1. The Mocs earned a 25-19 second set victory but moved to 1-1 on the day and 4-1 on the year.
Mackenzie Petermann and
Ali Travis paced the Moccasins once again with double-digit kills, at 12 apiece while Travis had a team-high 14 digs.
Mika Garza dished out 42 assists in the four-set matchup with the Nanooks (8-2) with seven digs behind team leader
Beatrice Formilan who registered 14.
Madison Fowler added another three blocks to her day against Alaska Fairbanks while she tied for the team lead with
Emma Shaddix and
Petermann against Alaska Anchorage earlier Friday.
Alaska Fairbanks was led by a trio of athletes with double-digit kills in Elena Guc (16), Rilee White (15), and Karli Nielson (10). Jessa Long scooped up a team-best 17 digs while Taylor Overn and Ainsley Smith split the workload in the match with 26 and 23 assists, respectively.
The Moccasins are back in action Saturday, Sept. 3 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern with a matchup with Findlay before capping the tournament at 9:00 p.m. Eastern against Black Hills State. The Findlay Oilers are 0-5 on the year including a pair of losses to Alaska Anchorage (3-0) and Arkansas-Fort Smith (3-1). The Black Hills State Yellow Jackets are 1-6 with three setbacks in the Fairbanks tournament with a loss to host Alaska Fairbanks (3-1), Arkansas-Fort Smith (3-1), and Alaska Anchorage (3-0).
