MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - Florida Southern's (6-4, 0-0 SSC) first 3-0 series sweep of the season came Sunday afternoon against Georgia College and State University (1-6, 0-0 PBC) at John Kurtz Field.
Â
The Mocs racked up nine runs in game three, solidifying their series win.
D'Ante Starks,
El'Rico Riley and
Jeff Liquori, each with two runs, led the Mocs in scoring. E. Riley also led the Mocs in hits, with three hits in four appearances at the plate.
Â
Despite not scoring in the first inning, both E. Riley and
Bryce Safferwich singled. The Mocs defense allowed no hits in the bottom of the first.
Â
The top of the second saw the Mocs score three runs on three hits, setting the tone for the rest of the game. GCSU walked
Rohsean Riley, who advanced to third on a double hit by Starks. The bases were loaded for the Mocs when, at the next at-bat, Georgia College walked
Jevin Relaford.
Â
Julio Cortez singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by GSCU's right fielder, sending Relaford to third and driving in runs for R. Riley and Starks. Relaford's scoring opportunity, the third and final run of the second, came on a single by Liquori. Cortez was left on base at the end of the inning.
Â
Georgia College set out to answer the Mocs' second-inning performance, scoring one run on two hits. Neither team scored in the third.
Â
The fourth inning started out strong as Relaford doubled to center field. Relaford advanced to third on a fly out but was tagged out at home on a fielder's choice when Liquori came up to bat. Liquori stole second, followed by a homer from E. Riley, which notched two more runs for the Mocs.Â
Â
The score remained 5-1 until the sixth, when the Mocs sprang into action once again. Starks singled through the middle, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Relaford. Cortez had a base hit that sent Starks to third. E. Riley's single that followed drove in Starks; during the same play, Cortez gained a base on a throwing error.
Connor Berry, next up at bat, drove in Cortez with a single to left field.
Â
In the top of the eighth, now leading GCSU by six, Florida Southern tallied two more runs. Liquori reached first due to a fielding error by the Georgia College second baseman and advanced to second when E. Riley gained a base on balls. Liquori advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a ground out by Safferwich to second. E. Riley would follow with the second Mocs run of the inning on a single through the right by
Mitch Donofrio.
Â
Relaford doubled to left field and advanced to third on a ground out in the ninth but was unable to add to the Mocs' nine runs.
Â
Collin Camarigg came in to pitch for the Mocs in the ninth, thwarting any attempt by GCSU to stage a comeback. Camarigg allowed no hits or runs in the bottom of the ninth, finalizing the score of 9-1.
Â
The winning pitcher for the Mocs was
Jordan Fox, who, in five innings pitched, allowed only two hits and one run.Â
Â
Next up, the Mocs will face Eckerd College on the road for FSC's first SSC matchup of the season on Friday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Turley Athletics Complex.
