Women's Basketball Earns Win on Senior Night

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College women's basketball captured a big win on senior night with a 72-50 decision against Barry University Saturday in George W. Jenkins Field House.

The Moccasins gained an early advantage over the Bucs, leading 21-8 in the first quarter.

Graduate student Ashley Shell had a standout performance for her last home game with the Mocs, scoring the first layup of the game to get the Mocs ahead. The Deerfield, Fla. native scored 15 points, claimed four rebounds, and surpassed 900 career points in the outing.

She has been a vital member of the Mocs after starting the season strong with a career-high of 25 points against Lee to open up the campaign. Shell is leading FSC with 13.8 points per game and 6.5 boards per game. Over the course of her career, she has been named the SSC Defensive Player of the Week and has earned the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll since her freshman year. Ashley has her bachelor's degree in accounting and a minor in marketing and is working towards her master's degree in accounting.

Sophomore Arielle Dabu ended the game with 16 points, shooting 4-for-9 from beyond the arc and racking up three assists.

On the defensive end, senior Domenica Zamora and freshman Sydney Gomes both came up with four steals each, while Zamora finished with five assists and Gomes had ten rebounds in 34 minutes of action.

Marissa Jenike filled up the stat sheet in only eleven minutes of game action. She went two for two in free throws, and two for three in three-pointers to score eight total points on the evening.

The Mocs raced out to a 21-8 start to claim an early lead over the visiting Bucs in a high-scoring first half. The team used a fifteen-point halftime lead to coast to victory as the Mocs scored 48 on the Bucs to run away with the game early in the second half.

The teams slowed down their offensive pace in the preceding quarters, as the Mocs were able to outscore the Bucs 24-17 in the final twenty minutes.

With the win, Florida Southern solidified their spot in fifth place in the Sunshine State Conference, which means they'll travel to fourth-seed Nova Southeastern on Tuesday in the first round of the SSC tournament. The Mocs beat the Sharks 66-58 at home on Jan. 28.

The game will be at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday night at Rick Case Arena in Davie, Fla.
