AUSTIN, Texas – Florida Southern College's
Matteo Zampese was named the College Sports Communicators 2022-23 Academic All-America Team Member of the Year for Division II Men's Swimming. Zampese is the first men's swimmer named to the honor, and the second Moccasin named All-America Team Member of the Year as men's soccer's Henri Tophoven earned the award in fall 2022.
Zampese, who is a junior from Bologna, Italy, has a 4.00 as a graphic design major. Zampese is a repeat Academic All-America® first-team selection, awarded the selection in last year's awards. Zampese helped the Mocs finish in 11th place at the NCAA Division II National Championship as he finished second in the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke, and a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke. He won the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley at this year's Sunshine State Conference Championships. With two NCAA appearances, Zampese is a 12-time All-American, including seven awards in this year's NCAA Championships.
Over his career with the Mocs, Zampese has won four SSC titles, with a 200 IM first-place finish in the 2021-22 conference championships. He is a two-time All-SSC First Team selection and has been awarded the CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team, D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, and SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. The junior holds the SSC and FSC records in the 200 IM, 200 medley relay, and the 400 medley relay, and a school record in the 100 free. He was part of last year's swimming team that brought home a team SSC Championship and a fifth-place finish on the NCAA national stage.
Division II had five repeat selections: Luka Cvetko (Wayne State University), Mahmoud Elgayar (Colorado Mesa University), Cade Hamond (University of Indianapolis), Ben Sampson (Colorado Mesa), and Zampese. Elgayar has been named to the Academic All-America® team four times.
The Division II team boasted a 3.84 average GPA with the first team checking in at 3.86.
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CSC with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2022-23 Division II Academic All-America® program.
