Mocs Minutes: Softball Hosts While Men's Lacrosse Opens SSC Play on the Road

  • Florida Southern is set to host non-conference opponent University of West Georgia, a mid-week twinbill. The Moccasins are coming off a four game losing streak after falling to #3 University of Tampa over the weekend in the Sunshine State Conference series in Tampa.
  • As a team FSC is seventh in the conference as the ranked Spartans was the first sweep of the Mocs faced in SSC action.
  • Junior Taylor Thomas continues the way supporting a .405 batting average overall. Skyler Ralstin batting a .347 and then junior Kiki Morris with a .322 and senior Kelsey Peck a .307 batting average. Thomas has 34 hits on the season with nine doubles, one homer, and 19 RBIs. Ralstin is 25-for-72 from the plate with 13 runs, three doubles and 11 runners batted in. Morris and Peck both have five doubles on the season with Morris collecting 19 hits and bringing in 10 runners and Peck with 27 hits six homers and 50 runs batted in. In the circle for the Mocs, Mel Rogers is leading the way with a 3.21 ERA followed by Ashley Blessin with a 4.01 ERA starting in 13 games with nine complete games striking out 41 batters. Rogers is 5-2 on the season with 12 appearances, five complete games and 31 batters sent back to the dugout with strikeouts.
  • West Georgia fell in six innings in game one against Eckerd by a 13-5 score before falling in a 4-1 game to the Tritons that has now won 13 straight games after Wednesday's doubleheader sweep.
  • Madison Vandergriff is leading the Wolves with a .338 batting average going 23-for-68 from the plate with three doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs. R.J. Janke is just being Vandergriff with a .333 batting average with four doubles, the homers, and 15 RBIs. In the circle, Katie Morris owns a 3-9 record supporting a 4.90 ERA with 67 strikeouts on the year so far.
  • HISTORY: This will be the 12th meeting between the Mocs and Wolves with FSC having a 10-1 advantage over West Georgia as the last five meetings have fallen in FSC favor.

  • No. 16 Florida Southern opens up Susnhine State Conference play this Thursday as the Moccasins travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on the Lynn Fighting Knights.
  • Senior Sean Nolan continues to etch his name into the FSC record book as he recently became the record holder for career points at FSC to add to his career hat tricks record which he set earlier this season. He is also working his way towards the career goals scored record and now sits just six goals behind the career leader Dane Sorensen (2012-15).
  • As a team, the Moccasins rank high in several statistical categories within NCAA Division II. FSC leads the country in caused turnovers per contest (16.00), ground balls per contest (47.50), points per contest (32.5) and scoring offense (21.0). The Mocs also rank second in the nation is scoring margin (+11.75) while ranking inside the top ten in assists per game (3rd, 11.50), total points (3rd, 260), total assists (4th, 92), shot percentage (4th, 0.364), total ground balls (5th, 380), man-up offense (6th, 0.571) and opponent clear percentage (8th, 0.742). Senior Nick Shannon leads both the NCAA and SSC in caused turnovers per contest (3.00) while senior Sean Nolan ranks 11th in the country in points per game (5.50) and 13th in goals per game (3.62).
  • Nolan leads the offensive attack for the Mocs as he leads the Sunshine State Conference in both goals per game (3.63) and points per game (5.50) while ranking second in assists per contest (1.88). Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck is second on the team in scoring with 25 goals so far in 2023 while ranking fourth in the SSC in goals per game (3.13). Four others have produced double-digit tallies this season including freshman Nolan Tighe (16), graduate student Jay Minor (14), junior Brendan Glasser (12) and graduate student Andrew Medeiros (11). Nolan leads the team with 15 assists while Medeiros and Minor have each handed out 13 assists this season. At the face off, it has been Czyz handling most of duties as he has gone 103-of-198 (.520) while fellow freshman Luke Henricksen has won 33-of-55 this season (.600). Czyz also leads the team in ground balls this season with 57 (7.13 per contest).
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team-best 24 turnovers this season while scooping up 29 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Graduate student Craig Connor ranks second on the team with 13 caused turnovers while senior Zac Fitzgerald ranks third with 12. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season with graduate student Maxwell Freestone and junior Michael Simone seeing the majority of the action. Freestone has a 2-2 record this season with a 12.00 goals against average. Freestone has made 48 saves in 230-plus minutes of action. Simone has started the last four contests and has a perfect 4-0 record with a 6.87 goals against average in 192-plus minutes of action. He has 31 saves and has seen action in seven of the eight contests this season.
  • Lynn has won two of its last three contests heading into Thursday night's match-up. The lone loss in the stretch came away from home in a neutral site contest versus nationally-ranked Pace. The Fighting Knights fell 12-6 in the contest held in Baltimore, Md. on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. The Fighting Knights are 4-1 at home this season with the lone loss coming at the hands of then-No. 3 Adelphi 15-6.
  • Graduate student Stephen Becker leads the offensive attack for Lynn with 18 goals through nine games this season. He is followed closely by senior Jalen Stanton who has 17 scores this season. In total, four Fighting Knights have achieved double-digit goals this season. Sophomore Dylan Colon has been the assist-man for the Fighting Knights as he has eight more assists than any other member of the team with 18 helpers this season. Graduate student Michael Miocic has been handling the face offs this season and is 98-of-169 (.580) in 2023 while three others have limited numbers. Miocic also leads the team with 34 ground balls.
  • Graduate student Chase Showalter leads the defense with 12 caused turnovers this season followed by a pair of Fighting Knights with seven each. The Fighting Knights have used four different goalkeepers in 2023 led by graduate student Colin Casey who has seen 364-plus minutes of action and has a 4-3 record with an 11.67 goals against average with 74 saves.
  • HISTORY: Thursday's contest will mark the ninth meeting between the Fighting Knights and Moccasins on the lacrosse field with FSC holding a slight 5-3 lead in the series. The Mocs won the 2022 meeting 19-14 in Lakeland but the Fighting Knights won the most recent contest in Boca Raton 13-8. The Fighting Knights are just 1-3 all-time at home against FSC with the lone victory coming in the most recent contest at Lynn in 2021.
