BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 16 Florida Southern College men's lacrosse team defeated Lynn University by a final score of 22-6 on Thursday night, on the road.
The Moccasins (7-2, 1-0 SSC) were dominant in every aspect of the game, quickly getting ahead of the host Fighting Knights (5-5, 0-1 SSC) with ten first-quarter goals and never looking back to win the opening game of the conference schedule.
Two freshmen had particularly excellent games, as
Nolan Tighe scored a career-high seven goals on attack in the outing, while face-off specialist
Jacob Czyz was fantastic, winning 18 of the 23 faceoffs that he took. He won 11 of those faceoffs to himself.
Among the other notable stat-getters were senior
Sean Nolan, who recorded five points on the day, and senior defenseman
Nick Shannon, who raked in four ground balls while matching his NCAA leading three caused turnovers per game average.
Junior
Michael Simone started the game in net and played phenomenally, stopping nine shots on the day to earn his fifth win of the season, all while holding the opponent to single-digit scores.
The Moccasins had a blistering start to their first road game in over a month and a half, scoring the first seven goals of the game beginning with Tighe's first tally midway through the first quarter.
In large part due to Czyz's performance at the 'X' for the next several minutes, the Mocs really poured it on.
Matt Flammenspeck and
Jay Minor scored in succession before Tighe scored three goals in the span of less than a minute to put the Moccasins up 6-0 with four minutes to play in the opening quarter.
Andrew Medeiros had two assists in the opening scoring run.
Sean Nolan got on the score sheet with his first goal to make it 7-0 before the Fighting Knights finally tallied to stop the early run.
The Mocs would tack on three goals by the end of the frame to take a 10-1 lead into the second quarter. Flammenspeck hit the back of the net again before
Brendan Glasser and
Brydon Robichaud tallied in the final minute to bolster the lead.
Florida Southern came out firing again in the second quarter, shutting out Lynn and scoring five goals in the game. Nolan and Medeiros each scored before Tighe continued his tirade, scoring three goals to make it 15-1 heading into halftime. All seven of Tighe's goals came in the first half.
The Fighting Knights opened the scoring in the third quarter, making it 15-3 on back-to-back goals before the Florida Southern offense came alive again. Robichaud and Glasser scored to make it 17-3 before
Clayton Moench and
Mason McQuiggin each tallied to keep the Mocs ahead by a healthy margin. Glasser scored again to close the frame with Florida Southern leading 20-3.
Lynn wound up scoring three goals in the fourth quarter, but a pair of strikes from sophomore
Owen McCusker maintained the FSC momentum until the conclusion, with the Mocs winning, 22-6.
The Moccasins, now riding a five-game winning streak, will return home for a non-conference bout against the Westminster College Griffins this Sunday, at noon.
