SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team won game one of its series against Saint Leo University by a 10-7 score Friday night at the Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
The Mocs (17-8, 4-3 SSC) tied their season best with four home runs in the game, including two from
Ryan Magdic. The Lions (14-11, 5-5 SSC) came within one heading into the ninth, but FSC pulled away with a 10-7 victory.
Florida Southern opened the game with a solo homer by Magdic as the leadoff batter deep to left field. Saint Leo responded with a sacrifice fly in the next half-inning to tie the game before a scoreless second inning.
Three hits in the third inning led to a sac fly by
D'Ante Starks for
Jevin Relaford to score in the top of the inning, but the Lions scored two off three hits in the bottom third to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth. The second homer of the day was by
Rohsean Riley who brought home
Mitch Donofrio to retake the lead for the Mocs. Just a few batters later, Magdic smashed his second homer of the night, a two-run shot to bring
El'Rico Riley home. In the top of the fourth, Mocs had five hits and four runs for a 6-3 Moccasin lead.
Saint Leo kept Florida Southern scoreless the next three innings while scoring two runs over two innings for a 6-5 FSC lead through seven innings. With a one-run lead, Mocs extended their advantage with their fourth homer of the night. Relaford smashed his second homer of the season to send E. Riley home and take an 8-5 lead. Another response by the Lions in the bottom of the eighth again brought the score within one, but the Mocs scored off an RBI triple by
Connor Berry and an RBI single by Donofrio for the 10-7 lead.
Collin Camarigg entered in the bottom of the ninth to retire the side and 10-7 Mocacsin win. Camarigg was credited with the save, his fourth of the season, and
Nathan Madej went six innings for his fifth win this year. Magdic led the Mocs with 3-for-4 and three RBI from his two homers on the day.
Drew Cavanaugh extended his hit streak to 19 games, the 10
th longest streak by a Moccasin since 1985 and the most since 20 games by
Duncan Hunter during the 2022 season.
The Mocs will be back in action tomorrow, March 25, for game two against the Lions with a 1 p.m. start at the Thomas B. Southard Stadium.
