Mocs Minutes: Men's and Women's Lacrosse Host Top-10 Opponents; Beach Holds Senior Day

  • The Florida Southern men's and women's track teams will send a small contigent to Cleveland, Tenn., Friday for the Flames Invitational hosted by Lee University. The Mocs posted several strong performances last season at the Flames Invitational including former Moccasin Mason Jones breaking the 10K school record while current junior Ellie Fluman ran the second fastest 10K in program history for the women.
  • The Florida Southern men will send four student-athletes to Tennessee to compete in two events. Freshmen Chris Colavita and Christian Giller along with junior Owen Allen will see action in the 10K while junior Bryson Yamnitz will tackle the 5K. Rain is forecasted for the entire day on Friday with temperatures in the mid-50s which could affect track conditions throughout the meet. The 10K has been split into a morning heat and an evening heat with Colavita running in the morning and Allen and Giller seeing action in the late night evening race.
  • The Florida Southern women will also be sending four runners to the meet on Friday with junior Ellie Fluman and sophomore Karah McElhone taking on the tough 10K event while sophomores Emma Mussante and Mya Stam will take on the 5K. The 10K has been split into a morning heat and an evening heat with McElhone running in the morning and Fluman seeing action in the late night evening race.

  • Florida Southern wraps up the regular season Saturday with a pair of matches versus Lake Sumter and Palm Beach Atlantic. The Moccasins will honor their two seniors, Emma Shaddix and Destiny Ramsey, prior to the 10 AM match versus Lake Sumter.
  • The Mocs will head to the AVCA Small College Beach Volleyball Championship in Tavares, Fla. following the conclusion of the regular season. During the most recent tri-meet, freshman Ashli Mckenny and junior Sarah Crocker picked up a 21-16, 17-21, 15-7 victory at No. 3 versus Erskine while freshman Christina Ramazio and sophomore Hayley St. Martin took the No. 4 match 21-19, 19-21, 15-11.
  • Lake Sumter recently took second at the inaugural Florida College System Activities Association / National Junior College Athletic Association (FCSAA/NJCAA) Region 8 Beach Volleyball Championship. The Lakehawks' second place finish earned an automatic bid to the inaugural NJCAA sponsored national tournament at the end of April. The Lakehawks had four players receive All-State recognition. Alyssa Guarino and Kaylee Hunt were named to the All-FCSAA second team while No. 2 pair Cassidy Rountree and Kaylin McCann were named to the All-FCSAA Pairs team.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic has won five of its last six matches including a 5-0 sweep of the Mocs at the Tampa Spartans Invitational this past weekend. The Sailfish are led at the No. 1 spot by Lunden Evans and Mya Krystosek who are 7-6 together this season including 6-5 at No. 1. Karla Cantero and Abigail Mason boast the most wins on the team as a pair with an 8-6 record. The duo is 3-0 at No. 4 and 5-6 at No. 5.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs are 2-0 all-time versus Lake Sumter having defeated the Lakehawks 5-0 twice in Lakeland during the 2022 season. The Sailfish hold an impressive 10-0 record versus the Mocs all-time including four victories this season.

  • No. 4 Florida Southern looks to rebound after a 15-14 setback at No. 5 Tampa Wednesday evening. In the loss, Madison Tare led the Mocs offensively with eight points on six goals and two assists. In goal, Sydney O'Neill played 58 minutes and made 12 saves for a career-high mark.
  • On the year, Jackie Stoller continues to pace the team with 59 points on 32 goals and 27 assists. Her assists leads the team while her goals are second to Hailey Daleo, who has 33 on the season. Gina Verrone leads the Moccasins in draw controls (60), ground balls (31), and caused turnovers (22).
  • As a team, Florida Southern averages 17.50 goals per game and allows 11.92 a game. Rylie Rittberg has played 483 minutes in goal and has 47 saves and has a 11.68 goals against average. O'Neill has 109 minutes in goal with 17 saves and a 12.15 GAA.
  • No. 7 Rollins snuck past No. 18 Embry-Riddle 9-8 Wednesday night to remain undefeated at 12-0. Caroline Gastonguay led the Tars with six points on four goals and two assists. In goal, Claire Barber had nine saves in the full time between the pipes.
  • Gastonguay leads the team on the year in total points (56) and has 10 more goals than the next closest with 33. Whitney MacMillan is the team leader in draw controls (37) while Gastonguay is the leader in groundballs (30) and caused turnovers (19).
  • The Tars average 14.67 goals per game and hold opponents to under 10, at 7.17 per game. Barber has the most minutes in goal, 366, with 33 saves and a 6.89 goals against average. Rachel Schlesinger has played 278 minutes and has 22 saves and a 8.21 goals against average.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 10-7 all-time against Rollins, 8-3 in Lakeland, including a 17-11 decision in the last meeting in the SSC tournament. The two teams have both been ranked in 16 of the 17 matches. Rollins won the regular season matchup in 2022, 16-12 in Winter Park, where the Mocs won the 17-11 game in Lakeland. Madison Tare led FSC with five points, two goals and three assists, while Abby McFerren too finished with five points on four goals and one assist. Both Lizzy Lynch and Hailey Daleo score four goals in the win. Clair Resit and Caroline Gastonguay led the Tars with three points, each with two goals and one assist.

  • No. 16 Florida Southern welcomes in Sunshine State Conference rival No. 8 Tampa Saturday night for a key SSC battle. The Mocs are riding a program-record eight-game win streak and look to remain perfect in SSC play.
  • Senior Sean Nolan became the program's all-time leading goal scorer this past Wednesday night as he tallied two goals in the opening five minutes of action versus Saint Leo to surpass Dane Sorensen's (2012-15) career mark of 175 goals. Nolan added two more tallies during the first half to push the record to 178. The senior is within striking distance of the 200 goal mark which only eight NCAA Division II student-athletes have achieved all-time.
  • As a team, the Moccasins rank high in several statistical categories within NCAA Division II. FSC leads the country in total assists (134), caused turnovers per contest (15.58), total ground balls (554), ground balls per game (46.17), total points (380), scoring margin (+11.83) and scoring offense (20.50). The Mocs also rank second in the nation in assists per game (11.17) and points per game (31.67) while ranking inside the top ten in opponent clear percentage (4th, 0.714), clearing percentage (6th, 0.906), shot percentage (8th, 0.350), and winning percentage (8th, 0.833). Senior Nick Shannon continues to lead the NCAA in caused turnovers per contest (3.17) while freshman Jacob Czyz ranks ninth in the country in ground balls per game (8.08).
  • Nolan leads the offensive attack for the Mocs as he leads the Sunshine State Conference in points per game (4.92) while ranking third in both goals per contest (3.17) and assists per contest (1.75). Sophomore Matt Flammenspeck is second in goals for the Mocs with 37, just one behind Nolan. Flammenspeck ranks fourth in the SSC in goals per contest (3.08). Six others have produced double-digit tallies this season including freshman Nolan Tighe (30), graduate student Jay Minor (23), junior Brendan Glasser (18), graduate student Andrew Medeiros (17), sophomore Brydon Robichaud (13) and sophomore Owen McCusker (10). Nolan leads the team with 21 assists while Medeiros sits in second with 20, followed by Minor with 19. At the face off, it has been Czyz handling most of duties as he has gone 163-of-297 (.549) while fellow freshman Luke Henricksen has won 37-of-74 this season (.500). Czyz also leads the team in ground balls this season with 97 (8.1 per contest).
  • Defensively, senior Nick Shannon has caused a team, conference and NCAA-best 38 turnovers this season while scooping up 50 ground balls to rank second on the squad. Senior Zac Fitzgerald ranks second on the team with 17 caused turnovers while graduate student Craig Connor ranks third with 16. Five goalkeepers have seen action for the Mocs this season with junior Michael Simone seeing the majority of the action. Simone has started the last eight contests and has a perfect 8-0 record with a 7.21 goals against average in 424-plus minutes of action. He has 75 saves and has seen action in 11 of the 12 contests this season.
  • No. 8 Tampa has won five of its last six contests with the lone loss coming on the road at then-No. 13 Rollins 12-6. The Spartans have two losses this season and they both came on the road. The Spartans are the defending SSC and National Champions and have spent the entire 2023 season ranked among the top-10 programs in the country.
  • The Spartans boast a quintet of 20-plus goal scorers led by graduate students Daniel Fitzpatrick and Luke McAnaney who each have a team-best 23 goals. Graduate student Harry Kilkowski has a team-best 18 assists this season while leading the team with 38 points thanks to his 20 goals. Graduate student Hunter Turner and senior Alex Poma have split time at the face off. Turner has won 80-of-133 (.602) while Poma has captured 72-of-117 (.615). Poma has a team-high 43 ground balls while Turner has 31.
  • Graduate student Trejan Cannon leads the defense with 18 caused turnovers followed by senior Matthew Beddow who has 16. Senior Blake Ulmer patrols the net for the Spartans and has an 8-2 record in 2023 with a 9.06 goals against average. The senior has 149 saves in net with a 62.1 save percentage.
  • HISTORY: Saturday's meeting will be the 19th contest all-time between the Spartans and Mocs on the lacrosse field. The Spartans boast a 17-1 record in those 18 meetings with the lone Florida Southern victory coming back in 2012 in Tampa, 11-7. The Spartans have won 16-straight against the Mocs and have held FSC to single digit goals in all but five meetings all-time.
