LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball lost its regular-season finale with a 10-9 loss in extra innings against Barry University Sunday afternoon at Henley Field.
The Mocs (32-18, 17-13 SSC) opened the day with three runs in the bottom of the first after resuming the game in the bottom half from yesterday's halted game. The Buccaneers (32-17, 16-14 SSC) ended the game in a double play after scoring the winning run in the top of the 10
th inning for the 10-9 sweep of the Mocs.
Barry University scored a single run in yesterday's start to the game before being halted due to prolonged weather delays. Mocs got on board to open today's portion with an RBI double by
Bryce Safferwich and a 2 RBI single by
Connor Berry for a 3-1 score through one.
The Buccaneers responded in the top of the second with six runs to take a lead they would keep until the seventh.
D'Ante Starks had a solo homer in the third and
Rohsean Riley hit an RBI single to send
Drew Cavanaugh home in the fourth for a 7-5 deficit.
The sixth inning had another two runs for the Bucs to extend their lead to four, but Mocs powered back with a two-run homer by
Mitch Donofrio and an RBI from Starks for
Jevin Relaford to bring them back within one run.
Riley hit an RBI single to tie the game in the following inning, one that remained tied as
Collin Camarigg entered to throw two scoreless innings and send the game into extras.
Barry had an RBI single in the top of the 10
th, but Mocs staged a comeback in the home half of the inning. Riley was leadoff and walked before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Starks had a single for runners at the corners, but
Jeff Liquori batted into a double play to end the game.
15 pitchers were used between the two teams with regional implications on both sides. Mocs entered the series sixth in the South Region and Barry eighth. With the sweep by the Buccaneers, the Mocs will await their postseason fate with the NCAA Regional Selection Show tonight at 11 p.m. on NCAA.com.
