Mocs Split Roadtrip Games, Falling 2-1 in Final Game in Alabama

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Florida Southern College men's soccer team closes out the weekend in Alabama returning to Florida after splitting the weekend. In the final game of the weekend, the Moccasins fell 2-1 against West Alabama after outshooting the Tigers 16-9 Sunday afternoon.

The Mocs (2-2, 0-0 SSC), dominated the ball with 16 shots, the most this season, having eight in the first half and eight in the second half. The Tigers had nine shots with five on goal that outdid FSC despite the Mocs eight shots on goal.

The first shot of the game came in at the 1:07 mark from junior forward Sander Trevorwho was saved by West Alabama's keeper. The Tigers quickly answered back with a shot of their own, but the Mocs sophomore keeper Lasse Dettmer kept the game tied at 0-0 with just over four minutes of action played.

The scoreless game was relinquished as a West Alabama forward found the back of the Mocs net to take a 1-0 lead with 27:43 remaining in the first half. FSC turned the pressure on as junior midfielder Felix Tonne, Trevor, grad midfielder Hunter Stroble, and junior midfielder Luca Bernoth all answered back with a shot, but nothing was falling in the Mocs favor.

At 38:17 in the first half, a foul came inside the penalty box for FSC, allowing a penalty kick for the Mocs, but a skilled Tiger keeper blocked Bernoth's shot, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of West Alabama.

Less than a minute after the missed PK, Florida Southern's junior midfielder Felix Aakerberg found the back of the net to put the Mocs on the board with an assist from junior defender Mathias Kjolner to tie the game 1-1.

West Alabama quickly took back the lead, scoring less than a minute after the Mocs goals to go into halftime with a 2-1 lead.

The scoreless second half gave the West Alabama Tigers the victory, but not without the Mocs giving it their all as juniors Jay Skelcher-Maxwell, Victor Beker, and Nyles Lockridge all had shots in the last minutes of action to try and rally for a tie.

In goal, Dettmer had three saves on the day, while the Tigers keeper had seven. Aakerberg led the Mocs with the lone goal, followed by Tonne with four shots, Bernoth with three, and Beker with two, as all three had two shots on goal.

The Mocs return home to Berend Field as they host Saint Leo University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Sept.13. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
