LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team saw their scoring drought come to an end as
Ruben Linden connected with
Darcy Moffat for his seventh goal of the year for a 1-0 win over the RV University of Tampa Wednesday night on Berend Field.
The Moccasins (3-3-2, 1-3-0 SSC) keeper
Lasse Dettmer earned his first win with a clean sheet while the Mocs defense was who earned the victory against the Spartans (5-4-1, 2-3-0 SSC) facing 19 shots.
Tampa started out strong in the first half looking to bounce back from their last loss against #1 Lynn University as they connected on back-to-back shots, but a 6'2" Dettmer layed out to keep the game scoreless after seven minutes of action.
Felix Tonne put the first shot on the board for the Mocs in the 11th minute as the Spartans answered back with one of their own. In the 14th minute the Spartans were looking to get a ball through the Mocs defense but Linden made the stop just outside the Mocs box. Linden took control finding Moffat at the opposite end of the field just outside Tampa's box where the forward sent a bullet in the back of the net just over a diving Spartan keeper to take an early 1-0 lead.
The early goal was all Florida Southern needed as the Mocs defense was able to hold Tampa as they came out with vengeance attacking the Mocs back line in the second half. Tampa's offense pressured FSC's defense having 10 shots while the Mocs was only able to put up two shots playing defense the majority of the second half.
All together, the Spartans had 19 shots to the Mocs nine as the keeper for Tampa finished with two saves and Dettmer earned a career-high of seven saves on the night while the team had two. The Mocs saw three players finish with yellow cards, but it was the Spartans that put forth an aggressive front putting up 13 fouls while FSC only had six.
FSC had just three shots on goal, as Moffat had one, followed by
Sam Michaels, and
Paul Hansen both with one a piece. The Spartans were able to put nine shots up on goal as seven different players had shots on goal, but was led by Lorenz Offner who connected on three.
