MELBOURNE, Fla. – The No. 16 Florida Southern College men's swimming team opened the 2024-25 season with a team win against Florida Tech on Friday afternoon at the Panther Aquatic Center.
The Moccasins won the season opener with a team score of 159 points to the Panthers' 103 points. FSC received h a No. 16 national ranking according to a CSCAA preseason poll released on Oct. 18. Tech was receiving votes in the same poll.
Florida Southern opened the meet with an event win in the 200 medley relay as a team of Brandon Wilson, Janek Barczyk, Nino Viallon, and Matheus Da Rocha won in a time of 1:30.70. In third place, the B team for FSC featured Michael Tretyakov, Reese Whelan, Tristan Clanton, and Anton Akopian in a time of 1:33.73.
In the 1000 free, FSC had a sweep of the podium with Peter Csicsaky (9:53.51), Thomas Wooldridge (9:54.66), and Clyde Crouse (10:00.36), followed by the top two spots in the 100 back with Tretyakov (50.20) and Wilson (50.62) represented. A second sweep of the event came in the 100 breast with Barczyk winning in 56.65, followed by Cooper Krance (59.79), and Reese Whelan (1:00.10).
Halfway through the meet, Akopian led the Mocs to a podium sweep of the 50 free with a winning time of 20.87. Da Rocha and William Neville rounded out the top three in the event. Tretyakov won the 100 free in 46.14, as Whelan and Walter Christman came in second and third respectively in the 200 breast. Another second and third placement in the following event (500 free) with Wooldridge and Csicsaky with times of 4:46.77 and 4:49.89.
The final events also stayed with the Mocs as Viallon won the 100 fly in 49.39. The last event was the 200 free relay as a team of Da Rocha, Viallon, Akopian, and Wilson won in a time of 1:23.00.
The Mocs will take next week off before their next meet at the University of Tampa on Nov. 1, set for a 5 p.m. start at the Riseman Aquatics Center.
