Women's Basketball Defeat Puerto-Rico Mayaguez 68-55

LAKELAND, Fla.- The Florida Southern College women's basketball team hosted the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Tuesday afternoon coming out victorious with a 68-55 win in Jenkins Field House. 
 
The Moccasins (2-2, 0-1 SSC) were led by Lily Randgaard earning her first double-double of the season finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds, the most since 2011. Sydney Gomes contributed 19 points to the win followed by Catalina Ion with 13 points. For the Janes (0-3, 0-0 Independent) they had three finish in double-digits led by Yillina Alicea with 15 points, Keylee Vargas, and Victoria Suarez finishing with 12 points apiece.
 
The first quarter witnessed six lead changes as Florida Southern opened up with a 2-0 lead, UPR-Mayaguez hung on to get as much as an 11-point lead before going on a 20-8 run to end the quarter up 23-13. 
 
Florida Southern went on a 9-point run in the second quarter to come within one, 23-22 to take back the lead for the first time since early in the first. It was Bre'Asia Washington who earned the lead for the Mocs with a jumper in the paint to make it 26-25 with just under four minutes in the second quarter.
 
The Janes rallied to take back a small lead but Gianna Vos sank a 3-pointer to give FSC a two-point lead with two minutes left in the first half. UPR-Mayaguez tied the game at 1:55 but the Mocs went on a 7-2 run to ending the quarter and head to the locker room for halftime with a five-point lead, 36-31. 
 
The Mocs were able to increase their lead to six points with a 3-pointer from Randgaard to make it 39-33 to open up the third quarter. UPRM rallied going on an 11-2 run giving them back a small one-point lead, 42-42 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Free throws kept the Mocs in the game but it would still be Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on top to end the third quarter with a 48-45 lead. 
 
Ion opened up the fourth quarter hitting a shot beyond the arc to tie the game and later take the lead with a fast break layup, 50-48. Vos and Lily Pereira continued to increase FSC's lead with a layup and Pereira sinking both free throws to make it a six-point game, 54-48. The University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez tried to close the gap as time ran out but the Mocs offense put up a 10-point gap and ended with a 3-point basket from Ion to end the game with a 68-55 win over the visiting Puerto Rico-Mayaguez team. 
 
Florida Southern returns to action on Saturday as they continue Sunshine State Conference play hosting Palm Beach Atlantic University. The tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
