MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team lost its conference opener to a 7-1 score Friday night against Barry University at Feinbloom Field.
Â
The Mocs (3-6, 0-1 SSC) gave up 13 hits to their own four in a tough early part of the game that put the game out of reach. The Buccaneers (7-5, 1-0 SSC) scored six runs in the first four innings, only allowing one run by the Mocs, to which BU answered in the seventh with a 7-1 Barry final in game one of the series.
Â
Strong winds played a factor throughout the game as FSC opened the first inning with a single by
D'Ante Starks and a later walk by
Jack Duffy to get in scoring position, but both were left on. Barry took advantage of the runners left on by FSC with a solo run off two hits in the bottom of the first. A fast second inning for the away team opened a three-run inning off five singles.
Mitchell LeRoy got the start for the Mocs and left two Bucs stranded with a third-out strikeout to keep it a 4-0 BU score through two.
Â
Florida Southern struggled to get on base in the next few innings as Barry climbed to a 6-0 lead after four innings of work.
Bryce Safferwich led off the fifth for the Mocs with a big triple and later scored after
Rohsean Riley hit an infield ball. In a 6-1 BU game in the bottom of the fifth, LeRoy gave up a walk in the first batter but picked off the Buccaneer to help keep a five-run deficit.
Â
Two singles over the final four innings were all the Mocs could muster as FSC was unable to get into scoring position. Barry added a run in the seventh to end game one with a 7-1 SSC victory. Riley led the Mocs with two hits and a solo RBI.
Tanner Rollyson entered in the sixth inning for three productive innings, striking out two and allowing only two hits and one run, which was unearned. LeRoy was handed the loss with the win to Barry's Joe Morrissey, who went seven innings and nine strikeouts with the one earned run.
Â
The Mocs wrap up the conference road series with a doubleheader tomorrow, Feb. 24, beginning at 1 p.m. at Fienbloom Field. Â
