Women's Basketball Fights Till the End, Drops SSC Matchup 61-59 on the Road

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. - The Florida Southern College women's basketball team fought till the end but fell on the road at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 61-59 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Moccasins (11-10, 4-10 SSC) out-shot the Eagles (15-4, 9-3 SSC) in every category going 42.9 percent from the field and 3-point line, and 66.7 from the line. Three finished in double-digits as Domenica Zamora led the way with 12 points, followed by Marissa Jenike at 11 and Amari Jackson with 10.

Zamora started the Mocs scoring with a 3-pointer to open the action just a little over a minute into the game. The Eagles made back-to-back jumpers to take their first lead, 4-3. Jackson and Sydney Gomes allowed the Mocs to earn back a lead as Jackson made a jumper and followed with a made free throw and Gomes scored on a made layup to make it an 8-4 lead for FSC.

Embry-Riddle went on a 7-0 run, getting the lead back and making it a three-point ball game, 11-8. Sarah Lange and Arriyana Bracero made baskets to cut the lead down to one, but an Eagles late three would give the hosts a four-point advantage, 16-14.

The Eagles went on a 9-6 run earning the biggest lead of the first half with a seven-point advantage over the Mocs. Florida Southern went to work to cut the lead down and tie the game as Bracero sank a shot beyond the arc and Lange hit back-to-back layups to make it 25-all. Embry-Riddle scored on a jumper to go into the halftime break with a two-point lead, 27-25.

To open the third quarter, Jackson tied the game once again 27-all, before the Eagles found the momentum to go on a 10-3 run earning another 7-point lead. The Mocs rallied to come within one-point on a Jenke jumper, making it 40-39 with just under two minutes in the third quarter. Embry-Riddle got another 7-point lead but Gomes cut the lead down to five, before the end of the third to make it 46-41 heading into the final quarter of action.

Gomes sank a shot beyond the arc, continuing to cut the Eagles' lead down, 46-44. Shots continued to fall on both ends of the court as ERAU never lost the lead, until Zamora sank back-to-back 3-pointers within a  minute to give FSC the first lead since the first quarter, 56-54.

A 5-0 run, allowed the Eagles to get another lead with just over a minute of action remaining. Jenike hit her third 3-pointer of the game to come within two with under a minute to play. Both teams would call for a timeout as Embry-Riddle missed a jumper allowing FSC the opportunity to come back. With under three seconds left, Zamora tried for the tie but missed as the Mocs fell to the Eagles with another two-point deficit, 61-59.

Florida Southern returns to Jenkins Field House on Saturday, Feb. 10 as the Mocs host Barry for another Sunshine State Conference matchup. The tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
