#5 Mocs Hold Off #17 Mavs on the Bank of the Hudson

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Graduate student Jackie Stoller notches a career-best 11 points in the No. 5 Florida Southern Moccasins' 18-13 win over No. 17 Mercy Mavericks on the bank of the Hudson River at Mercy Field.
 
Jackie Stoller led Florida Southern (5-3) with 11 points on seven goals and four assists. Abby McFerren joined in the career day with seven points, tying a career-high as the York, Pa. native had a pair of goals and five assists.
 
McKenzie Gaghan had a career day as well with 11 saves on 34 total shots in goal. Gaghan earned the win in cage playing the full 60 minutes to move to 5-3 on the season.
 
Madison Tare once again found the back net multiple times with four goals on six shots. Kolby Cohen and Ellie Griffin each scored a pair of goals as Camden Frissora finished off the scoring for the Mocs with one goal. Cohen paced the team with eight draw controls as Brayden Cannelli (5) and Audrey Cannelli (3) tallied eight combined. Maria Reeves, Caitlin Murphy, and Griffin each picked up one ball for the Mocs' 19 draw controls in the game. 
 
Leah Hansen led Mercy University (1-4) with six points on five goals and one assist. Kelly Rosenfeld and Sydney Corley registered hattricks for the Mavericks as Erin Shimborske finished the scoring for Mercy with two goals.
 
Madison Tare opened the game with back-to-back goals to put the Moccasins head 2-0 within the first 2:34 of the game. The Mavericks answered with a pair of goals to tie it at 2-2 with just under 10 minutes to play. Florida Southern would close the first quarter with a commanding lead with five goals to end the quarter (7-2). Jackie Stoller (3), Abby McFerren, and Camden Frissora all scored in the run for the Mocs.
 
Like the first quarter, Florida Southern opened the quarter with the first goal as Stoller found Ellie Griffin for an 8-2 lead. Three straight goals by Mercy pulled the game to within three goals, 8-5, Stoller and McFerren would score back-to-back for a 10-5 lead before Stoller scored on a free position shot with 1-second left.
 
A 10-goal quarter saw each team find the back of the net five times. The Mavericks opened the frame with a goal at the 13:42 mark (11-6) before Stoller found Kolby Cohen and McFerren found Stoller for a 13-6 lead with 11:26 to play. The Mavs scored four of the game's next five goals (14-10). Griffin and Stoller closed the quarter to make it 16-10 Florida Southern.
 
Like the third, Mercy scored the first goal of the final frame as well as the second to bring the game to within four (16-12). McFerren dropped a dime to Tare who finished her fourth goal of the game and the 17-13 lead. Leah Hansen scored the last Mavs goal at the 3:50 mark (17-13) before Stoller dodged and found a cutting Cohen to the middle who rolled the ball past the keeper for the final goal of the game as Florida Southern went on for the 18-13 win.
 
No. 5 Florida Southern returns to the field on Thursday, March 14 at 7 p.m. when the Moccasins host the Lee Flames. The game is dedicated to Morgan's Message, taking a shot at Mental Health. After the Mocs and Flames to the field, Florida Southern will host No. 14 Bentley on March 16 at 11 a.m. for senior day.
