Men's Soccer Concludes Road Trip With a 1-1 Draw Against Delta State

Darcy Moffat Scores sixth goal in tie

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Florida Southern College men's soccer team concluded the weekend in Memphis, Tenn. with a 1-1 tie against Delta State University on Sunday morning.

The Moccasins (2-0-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Darcy Moffat scored in the fifth minute of action. The Statesmen (1-1-2) trailed the majority of the game until Ryan Thistle tied the game in the 70th minute that would be the final and end the game with a tie.

Both teams opened up aggressively with back-to-back shots from each team in the fourth minute of play. Delta State attacked first with a shot to the bottom left that the Mocs keeper Joe O'Shaughnessy was able to get behind to save and leave the game scoreless.

Moffat, who continues to be the force behind FSC's offense, connected on a shot that went just high, but quickly was in position to receive an assist from Felix Tonne to sink a shot into the back of the net for a goal, putting the Mocs up 1-0 at the 4:50 mark.

With still 40 minutes to play in the first quarter, Florida Southern put the pressure on Delta State's defense putting up six shots while the Statesmen had just one.

After the halftime break, the Mocs came out on the pitch with the same energy putting up a shot and an O'Shaughnessy save to keep a 1-0 lead. With time counting down, Delta State found an opportunity after a shot went high for FSC and scored to tie the game 1-1 in the 70th minute.

The Statesmen continued to outshoot the Mocs in the second half putting up eight shots to FSC's four. The Mocs defense stood strong on the back line not allowing any additional goals to conclude the game with a 1-1 tie.

FSC finished with 10 shots, two being on goal, while DSU was one shot shy from tying the Mocs with nine as they had three shots on goal. O'Shaughnessy finished with two saves, while the Statesmen keeper had just one. Delta State earned more corners with five as the Mocs had two, but both teams finished with 10 fouls on the day.

Florida Southern returns home to Berend Field on Saturday, Sept. 21 to host Lynn University in the Sunshine State Conference opener. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Barnett Athletic Complex.
