LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 12 Florida Southern College baseball team opened its series against the University of South Carolina Beaufort with a 10-5 win on Friday night at Henley Field.
The Moccasins (7-1) took off with 15 hits in a big win against USC Beaufort, the first matchup between these two teams. The Sand Sharks (2-7) managed 11 hits against FSC but left 12 on in the series opener.
Rohsean Riley had a team-high four hits and three RBI in the game.
Colby Brewington was right behind with three hits and a host of Mocs with two hits:
Grant Thoroman, Jack Duffy, and
Noah Rabin. Rabin and Thoroman each had a homer and a double added by Rabin for extra-base hits. FSC had nine stolen bases tonight, led by Thoroman with four, matching the season-high set by
Jevin Relaford earlier in this season.
Sachem Ramos had his third Friday night start and finished with his third consecutive win of the season after 5.1 innings of work and 10 strikeouts, the most by a Moc this season.
Casey O'Dell was the first reliever for 0.2 innings before
Robert Tracy III took over for the next two innings with four strikeouts.
Austen Kessler finished the game with two strikeouts in his one inning, bringing the staff total to 16 strikeouts, the most in 2025 for a single game.
Luke Doty led the Sand Sharks with three hits and two RBI in their 10-5 loss. Doty had a solo homer, with a double by Joe Turner and a triple by Jon Davis for extra-base hits. USCB finished with 11 total hits, left 12 men on, with five stolen bases and two sacrifice flies. On the mound, Alex Simmons had the start and loss after three innings and three runs scored. He was relieved by Matt Navarro, PJ Luebbers, and Andrew Kleppinger.
Florida Southern was first to score after a two-RBI single by Riley in the bottom of the first. USC Beaufort added a single run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Doty, but the Mocs extended their lead to four after three runs in the fourth inning. Relaford had a bunt to third, but a throwing error extended the play for one run to score. Scott then had an RBI single for the second run, followed by another solo run scored for a 5-1 lead through four innings.
The Sand Sharks had a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but the Mocs scored again with an RBI double by Rabin and an RBI single from Brewington in the bottom half. In the top of the sixth, USCB had an RBI triple and continued with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to cut the deficit to three.
Rabin had a solo homer in the seventh, followed by a solo homer by Thoroman in the eighth to make it a 9-4 game, turned 10-4 game after an RBI single by Riley. The Sand Sharks managed a single run off a sac fly in the ninth but ultimately lost 10-5 in game one.
The Mocs will have game two of the series tomorrow, Feb. 15 with a 1 p.m. start at Henley Field. A ceremony celebrating baseball alumni and the anniversaries of the 1975, 1985, 1995, and 2005 national championship teams will take place before the first pitch.
