Women's Basketball Fall to Tars on the Road

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Florida Southern College women's basketball traveled down I-4 taking a tough loss on the road falling to Rollins College on their senior night 75-58 in the Alfond Sports Center on Wednesday afternoon.

The Moccasins (10-16, 5-14 SSC) had three finish in double-digit scoring led by Sydney Gomes with 14 points and followed by Lily Pereira with 11 points and Catalina Ion with 10. For the Tars (9-17, 4-15 SSC) they had four in double-figures as Clarie Erickson and Maddie Dillinger both contributed 18 points apiece, followed by Kaitlyn Sanders with 14 and Faith Newton with 10 points.

Pereira opened the scoring with a layup assisted by Anna Denes to take a 2-0 lead. Rollins went on a 4-0 run, getting out to a 4-2 lead before a 3-pointer from Gomes put the Mocs up by one, 5-4. FSC and Rollins exchanged possessions as Pereira and Denes tied the game but a 3-pointer and jumper from the Tars gave Rollins a five-point lead. Back-to-back layups from Denes and Pereira got the Mocs within one but another Tars shot beyond the arc gave Rollins a four-point lead. Lily Randgaard sank a 3-pointer, but 10-2 run to end the quarter gave the Tars a 27-19 lead.

Erickson went on a 5-0 run to open the second quarter as the Tars increased its lead to 13. Ion was able to get the and one to cut Rollins lead down to single digits after two minutes of action but a 3-pointer from the Tars put Rollins back up by 11 points. Pereira answered back with  a three of her own to soften the lead but a 13-7 run with three consecutive shots beyond the arc gave Rollins a 14-point lead heading into the halftime break.

The Mocs struggled coming out of the break as the Tars opened up with a 6-0 run to increase the lead before FSC could score at 5:20 as Rangaard was fouled and sank both free throws. A 7-4 run led by the Mocs to end the third quarter but it was still a 15-point game in favor of the Tars, 58-43.

Entering the final quarter of action, Rollins opened with a 3-pointer but Gomes reciprocated the shot sinking a 3-pointer to keep it a 15-point game. The Mocs and Tars exchanged buckets as Gomes hit her third three of the night but a 9-0 run followed to increase Rollins lead to 23-points, 72-49. FSC tried to cut at the Tars lead in the final minute of play as Gomes found Gianna Vos for a 3-pointer, but it was not enough as the Mocs fall to the Tars on the road, 75-58.

Florida Southern concludes the regular season on Saturday as they travel down to West Palm Beach to take on the Palm Beach Atlantic. Tip off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
