ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The Florida Southern College women's basketball team dropped a Sunshine State Conference match up on the road after a week off to Eckerd College, 78-54 on Wednesday evening.
The Moccasins (10-10, 5-8 SSC) were led by
Sydney Gomes with 12 points, followed by
Lily Pereira and
Dakota Daniello with seven off the bench. For the Tritons, they had four finish in double-figures with Greta Carollo leading the way with 18 points.
Sarah Lange opened up the scoring to give FSC the advantage in a 2-0 lead to start. Eckerd went on a small run to take a 4-2 lead, but the Mocs tied it up on an
Anna Denes layup. The Tritons quickly got the scoring rolling school a shot beyond the arc to take back a lead and started the run, going on a 15-2 run to end the first quarter with a 12-point advantage, 22-10.
The second quarter opened up with back-to-back Pereira and Daniello layups to cut the lead down to single digits, 22-14. A 7-2 run from FSC closed the gap even more to make it just a three point game, but Eckerd turned on the pressure going a 10-0 run to make it 34-21 with under two minutes in the second quarter. Gomes hit the first 3-pointer of the game for FSC to stop the run but it was not enough as Eckerd went into halftime with a 40-25 advantage.
Florida Southern and Eckerd exchanged possessions before Denes got the scoring started in the third with a layup at 8:37. It was two minutes of no scoring, but it would be the Tritons that broke the scoring draught with a layup. Both teams exchanged buckets the rest of the quarter, as Eckerd finished on top once again with a 20-point lead.
The fourth quarter Eckerd opened it with a 10-0 run before Gomes pushed to the paint for a layup to break the run, 68-40. Florida Southern tried to cut at the Tritons lead but the lead was too far out of reach falling on the road, 78-54.
Florida Southern returns home to host Lynn in another SSC rematch. The tip off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Jenkins Field House.
