LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College baseball team pulled away in the eighth inning to win the series opener against Georgia Southwestern State University by a 4-1 score on Friday night at Henley Field.

The Moccasins (3-1) scored two insurance runs in the eighth to give enough room for the win against the Canes. The Hurricanes (4-1) had the advantage in hits but left 10 men on base in their first loss of the season.

Florida Southern had a light day at the plate with five hits, led by
Mikey Scott and
Grant Thoroman with two hits each.
Cory Filley was the final Moccasin to record a hit in the game, with Scott leading the team with two RBI. Both Scott and Filley had big RBI doubles in the eighth inning as a big game-changer into the final inning. Getting on base through a walk and hit-by-pitch,
Jevin Relaford had four steals in the game, a season-high and most since the 2015 season when Kyle Richards stole four against Mount Olive on Feb. 15. Relaford was one shy of the program record of five stolen bases set back in 1983.

On the mound, the Mocs had another five innings by
Sachem Ramos for his second win of the season allowing four hits and one run with six strikeouts. He was relieved by
Casey O'Dell and
Wyatt Clark with the save going to
Colby Rice, who struck out two in the final frame.

Georgia Southwestern had six Canes register a hit, one each with Deerman the only RBI of the team. The Canes' starter Andrew Geiger went seven innings with 112 pitches, with two runs scores off three hits and six strikeouts.

Florida Southern had a successful start to the game after a big single to center by Scott with one out to score Thoroman and the first run of the day. The Mocs then followed with another solo run in the third after an RBI single by Thoroman to score Relaford for the 2-0 lead. After some big hits by GSW, a run scored in the fifth by Deerman to cut the game to a 2-1 FSC lead through five innings.

Neither team scored over the next three innings until the Mocs had a big eighth inning to pull away from the Canes. Scott had a big RBI double, followed by an RBI double by Filley to go up 4-1 into the final inning. Rice entered and handled business to get the save, his second of the season, and a 4-1 win for the Mocs.

The Mocs will have game two of the series tomorrow, set for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Henley Field.
