WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - #16 Florida Southern College women's tennis defeated #6 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University during the battle for third place in the Sunshine State Conference tournament on Sunday afternoon in West Palm Beach at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the Moccasins (17-6) earned the early point with a clinch win as the No. 3 court finished first to give the Mocs an upper hand as
Annika Berrendorf and
Jolie Miller won 6-4. The #26 doubles pair of
Kennedi Brown and
Kelly Klaren defeated #28 Laura Cuesta Bret / Carla Cabero del Hie, 7-5.
In singles action the first point went to Florida Southern as
Emily Jennewein won the No.6 singles 6-4, 6-1 to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead. The Eagles won the fourth court as #69 defeated
Annika Berrendorf with a 7-5, 6-1 final. FSC earned the next two matches to seal the win with
Beatriz Costa winning in three sets 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 followed by
Kelly Klaren to close out the tournament with a three-set win as well, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The SSC tournament ended with the Mocs taking third place, and they will turn their attention to the NCAA postseason selections on Monday, May 5 where they hope to have a chance to play in the South Regional tournament rounds.
