Florida Southern Pays Tribute to James Meehan in 3-0 Win

LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern men's soccer (3-0-0, 0-0-0) secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Christian Brothers (2-1-0, 0-0-0), with a shutout performance from the defense and goalkeeper.

Prior to kickoff, Florida Southern men's soccer and the home crowd at Barnett Athletic Complex honored former Moccasin James Meehan with a one-minute applause. The heartfelt tribute celebrated Meehan's impact on the program and his lasting legacy as both a player and teammate, setting the tone for an emotional evening that culminated in a 3-0 victory for the Mocs.

The Moccasins picked up another strong result against Christian Brothers, highlighted by a balanced attack and a lock-down defensive performance. Junior Darcy Moffat found the back of the net for his second goal of the season and 11th of his Moccasin career, while sophomore Tim Baierlein continued his hot streak with a goal in his third straight match. Graduate student Daniel Shabani added to the scoring as his shot deflected off a defender and into the net, and senior goalkeeper Senior Lasse Dettmer anchored the defense with his third consecutive shutout and sixth career clean sheet.

The first half commenced with a strong start from the home side, as Moffat found the back of the net just two minutes into the match, assisted by Baierlein. FSC continued to press, and in the 17th minute, Shabani doubled the lead with a goal, set up by sophomore Hector Oliver. Dettmer contributed defensively, making crucial saves to maintain the 2-0 advantage for the Mocs going into the break.

The second half began with a swift offensive play from Florida Southern, as Baierlein capitalized on a setup by freshman Brage Aune to score in the 47th minute, extending their lead to 3-0. Moffat challenged the Christian Brothers' goalkeeper with multiple attempts, although both were saved. Dettmer remained solid in goal, denying several attempts by the visitors, including a crucial save against Alexander Blanche in the 69th minute.

Dettmer recorded a shutout with five saves to secure the victory for FSC. Shabani contributed to the scoreboard by netting one goal on three shots. Moffat's performance included a game-winning goal and three shots on goal out of four attempts. Baierlein added to the tally with one goal and one assist.

Sebastian Torka stood out in goal for Christian Brothers, recording six saves, with four in the first half and two in the second. Alexander Blanche led the team's offensive efforts, tallying six shots, four of which were on goal. Joe Vokins contributed with two shots, adding pressure to the opposing defense.

The next challenge for FSC takes them on the road to St. Augustine, Fla., where they will face Flagler College on September 16. The match is set for 6 p.m. at Saints Field.
