TAMPA, Fla. — Florida Southern College women's soccer (5-1-8, 2-1-5 SSC) suffered its first loss of the season, falling to Tampa (8-4-3, 5-2-2 SSC) 1-0 Wednesday night at Pepin Stadium.
The Mocs generated the first shot of the half on
Ellie Dossantos' attempt in the third minute and kept the Spartans to one shot before the match reached the 33-minute mark. The half tightened through a foul-heavy middle stretch, with fouls on both sides of the field. The Spartans broke through at 33:40 when Kaylee Gibson scored off an assist from Avery Bracher to make it 1-0. Florida Southern pushed for a response with
Isabella Payne's shot in the 42nd minute, but the Mocs went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Florida Southern pressed for a second-half equalizer during a 56:04-65:03 stretch, producing four shots and two corners while
Hayden Johnston, Payne and
Sammie Markey each had attempts kept out. UTampa answered with pressure later in the half, but FSC held the margin at 1-0 through a sequence that included a Spartans corner, three shots and
Carly Brodsky's save on Kendall Gouner in the 80th minute. The half also tightened physically, with the Moccasins continuing to defend through the final minutes. Markey put another shot on frame at 85:43, but Lia Doohan saved it, and the score held as the Spartans finished off a 1-0 result.
Markey put both of her shots on goal. Johnston also recorded two shots, both on frame. Payne added two shots, including one on goal. Brodsky played all 90 minutes in goal and made one save.
