Baierlein and Moffat's Brace Give Mocs a Resounding Season-Opening Victory, 4-0

It was brace number two as a Moc for Baerlein and fifth for Moffat on the night.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Florida Southern (1-0-0, 0-0-0 SSC) secured a commanding 4-0 victory against Barton (0-1-0, 0-0-0 CC) on Friday evening (August 28) to start their 2026 campaign at Berend Field.

Florida Southern's defense recorded a shutout, with Ricardo Marques making five saves in his first appearance as a Moc, while the offense capitalized with four goals on eight shots on goal.

The first period began with Florida Southern College establishing its presence on the field. Early attempts by Tim Baierlein and Joao Lopes tested Barton's defense, but it was not until Payton Rausch's unselfish assist to Baerlein in the box that the Mocs broke the deadlock  in the 35th minute. Baierlein struck again just two minutes later, with an assist from Luciano Schiaffini, doubling the lead to 2-0.

Florida Southern maintained its momentum throughout the period, with consistent pressure and a robust defensive setup highlighted by Ricardo Marques' crucial fully extended save against the Bulldogs. The home team entered the halftime break with a solid 2-0 advantage.

The second period began with a significant development for FSC as Darcy Moffat scored in the 47th minute, assisted again by Schiaffini, to extend the lead. Marques delivered a strong defensive performance, saving multiple attempts by Barton's Bruno Marques, maintaining FSC's advantage.

As the period progressed, FSC continued to apply pressure, with Baierlein and Tommaso Duri both creating opportunities, though they were denied by Alejandro Sepulveda in net. In the closing moments, Moffat struck again from three-quarters pitch in the 89th minute, seeing the Bulldog keeper off his line, sealing the match with a final score of 4-0 in favor of the Moccasins.

Ricardo Marques recorded a shutout with five saves, contributing significantly to the Mocs' defensive effort. Baierlein scored twice on six shots, including the game-winning goal, demonstrating his impact on the offensive end. Moffat also found the back of the net twice, converting both of his shots on goal. Schiaffini also added two assists in his debut with the Mocs, effectively supporting the team's scoring opportunities.

For Barton, Alejandro Sepulveda stood out as the Bulldogs' goalkeeper, recording four saves from 16 shots faced. Bruno Marques was a key offensive player, leading Barton with three shots, all on target. Sora Watanabe and Santiago Olivo each contributed to the attack with one shot on goal apiece.

The 4-0 victory marked the most goals and largest victory in a season opener since 2018, and the first match with two different Mocs finding the back of the net twice since 2022 in a 5-0 against Atlantis University.

Looking ahead, FSC is set to face Middle Georgia State University on Sunday (August 30) back at home. Kickoff at Berend Field is set for 1 PM.
