DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Florida Southern College volleyball (2-1, 0-0 Sunshine State) fell to No. 16 Missouri Western (3-0, 0-0 Mid-America Intercollegiate) in straight sets, with final scores of 16-25, 15-25, 15-25, at the ICI Center on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Moccasins recorded a weekend-best 47 digs.
Florida Southern moves to 2-1 overall to conclude their season-opening weekend at the Bahama House Classic. Missouri Western improves to 3-0 after their weekend in Daytona Beach.
Missouri Western quickly took control in the opening set, capitalizing on multiple attack errors to establish a 6-1 lead.
Whitney Mall recorded a kill to halt Missouri Western's early momentum briefly, but the visitors responded with another run, extending their advantage to 10-2.
As the set progressed,
Elizabeth McDonald and
Bali Coles secured crucial points for the Mocs, narrowing the gap to 18-9. Despite the Mocs' defensive efforts with 19 digs, Missouri Western maintained its lead with consistent offensive pressure and secured the set with a 25-16 result.
The second set began with a brief exchange of points, with Florida Southern keeping pace early through timely kills by Coles and McDonald. A block by Mall and
Catherine Sweeney helped maintain parity with the Griffons. However, several attack errors allowed Missouri Western to pull ahead once again.
Midway through the set, the Moccasins were unable to sustain momentum as Missouri Western capitalized on a series of plays, extending its lead. Although Coles and
Ella Kuosmanen managed to put a few more points on the board for FSC, Missouri Western closed the set strongly, finishing with a 25-15 advantage.
Florida Southern began the third set with a brief lead, highlighted by a kill from
Mel Garrett and a service ace from Baruch. Despite initial momentum, Missouri Western responded quickly, leveling the score at 6-6. Sweeney and Baruch provided key kills, but consistent pressure from the Griffons kept the score tight.
As the set progressed, Missouri Western gained control, capitalizing on a series of errors by the Moccasins to extend its lead. Florida Southern fought back with a block by
Lindsay Piktel and Sweeney, followed by a service ace, narrowing the gap to 20-13. However, Missouri Western surged with a decisive run to close the set 25-15.
Nako Sasaki led the defensive effort with a match-high and season-high 18 digs.
Elizabeth McDonald and
Bali Coles each contributed six kills to lead the Moccasins' attack.
Mallory Baruch made her first appearance of the season, contributing eight assists, digs, two aces and two kills.
Mackenzie Peters led Missouri Western with .778 hitting percentage on zero errors, adding a service ace and contributing three total blocks. Brooklyn Gormley contributed six kills and four blocks on an errorless .545 efficiency. The Griffons' libero, Anna Weberg, anchored the defense with 14 digs.
Florida Southern will return to Lakeland for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. The Mocs will face (RV) Oklahoma Baptist in George W. Jenkins Field House.
