FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Florida Southern College Men's Soccer team (8-1-0, 3-0-0 SSC) defeated Nova Southeastern (1-6-0, 0-4-0 SSC) by a 3-1 margin on Saturday night (Sep. 26) at NSU Soccer Stadium. A second-half brace from
Tim Baierlein was the difference in the contest.
Florida Southern opened the scoring in the tenth minute, when
Ollie Stephens finished his fourth goal of the season off an assist from
Pablo Overfeld after a long throw in from
Darcy Moffat for a 1-0 lead. Earlier,
Ricardo Marques started in goal, and FSC absorbed an early Sharks shot before answering with Stephens' goal. The visitors added another look in the 21st minute when
Hector Oliver put a shot on frame, but Henrik Dahl made the save, while the Sharks continued to build pressure with multiple corners and a Marques save in the 39th minute. Nova Southeastern tied it at with a minute left before the half on Eduardo Fontan Rodriguez's goal from Kasper Kitchin, and the match went to halftime level at 1-1.
Tim Baierlein scored twice in the opening eight minutes of the second half, first putting the Moccasins ahead 2-1 at 46:43 off a tap in from a cross, and then extending the lead to 3-1 at 52:43 with
Luciano Schiaffini's beautiful set piece assist that found the head of the junior. Florida Southern also kept pressure on after the goals, with
Dakota Henry forcing a save in the 60th minute for his first shot on target of the year. The Sharks generated chances in response, but Marques made an incredible save at 59:26 and the Mocs absorbed four opponent attacking actions in eleven minutes without conceding. The second half ended with FSC scoring the only two goals of the half and holding the 3-1 advantage shown after Baierlein's second finish.
Baierlein scored twice on two shots on goal and recorded the game-winning goal. Stephens added a goal on his only shot. Marques played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves. Overfeld, Moffat and Schiaffini each recorded an assist.
The Sharks led in total shots, 12-5, but only managed to put three on target to FSC's three. The Mocs didn't attempt a corner kick all night while holding off four NSU ones of their own. No cards were assessed and each keeper made two saves.
Up next, Florida Southern hosts Saint Leo on Wednesday (Sep. 30) in a match where they hope to avenge their only loss of the season. First kick is set for 7 p.m. at Berend Field in Lakeland.
