Nate Striz

Nate Striz has been Florida Southern's pitching coach and head coach of the Mocs' junior varsity program since 2017. During his time with the Moccasins, he has helped develop three all-American pitchers, including 2018 Brett Tomko Award winner J.T. Hintzen. Striz has seen four of his pitchers (Logan Browning, Cooper Bradford, J.T. Hintzen, and Jake Walsh) drafted by MLB teams, while two others (Matt Martin and Leo Rodriguez) have signed minor league free-agent deals with MLB franchises.

Walsh was the 2017 NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Year and a Tomko Award Finalist, while a total of five hurlers have earned all-region accolades since Striz joined the Moccasin coaching staff. In 2018 the Mocs set a single-season school record with 518 strikeouts, and Striz's pitchers fanned 481 in 2017, the third-best single-season mark in program history.

Prior to his time with the Moccasins, Striz spent five seasons in Minor League Baseball as a pitcher in the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, and Colorado Rockies organizations. He appeared in 148 games in his professional career, advancing to Double-A with the Red Sox and Rockies. A standout at the University of North Carolina, Striz was drafted by the Indians in the 22nd round following his junior season with the Tar Heels.

He made 64 appearances out of the bullpen at UNC, recording three saves and 66 strikeouts in 60.1 innings. Striz was part of a Tar Heels squad that made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008, 2009, and 2010, including a pair of regional titles in 2008 and 2009.

A Lakeland native, Striz attended Santa Fe Catholic High School from 2004-2007 where he was twice named the Class 2A Player of the Year as well as the 2007 Polk County Player of the Year. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft by the Minnesota Twins, but did not sign and opted to play at UNC.

After finishing his professional career, Striz returned to Lakeland to finish his undergraduate degree at Florida Southern. He earned his bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis in sports management in 2016.

Striz and his wife, Allison, have two daughters, Abigail and Elizabeth.
