Freshmen David Stiles and Dan Naherny set school records in their Moccasin debuts, but Tampa outdistanced Florida Southern 140-105 in the season-opening meet for both men's teams Saturday at Tampa.
Stiles' record came in the 1,000-yard freestyle, as he turned in a time of 10:25.29, topping the previous mark of 10:45.50 by Matt Love in 2007. Naherny claimed the 200-yard backstroke record in a time of 1:59.66, breaking the previous record of 2:00.66 by Bryan O'Hare in 2006. Naherny also won the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.98) and finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (56.60). Freshman Matt Bozym picked up FSC's first win in the meet, edging Tampa's Jeff Fiore by seven-hundredths of a second to win the 50-yard freestyle in 22.61. FSC's other event wins came from Kelly Dorian in the 100-yard butterfly (53.87) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Dorian, Charlie Dolan, Greg Gorman and Bozym (1:33.31).
The Spartans won eight of the 14 events and with a squad more than double the size of the Moccasins' roster, the Spartans were able to claim the top three spots in six events.
The Moccasins' next meet will be their home opener, a double-dual against Savannah College of Art & Design and Saint Leo, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. at the Hollis Wellness Center Pool.
