Mocs Score Early, Then Hold On For 8-6 Win Over Eckerd

The Moccasins scored five runs in the first four innings, then held on for an 8-6 non-conference win over Eckerd Monday night at St. Petersburg.

Andrew Grutka, Will Cherry and Braxton Chisholm each drove in a run in the Moccasins' three-run second inning. Colin Kaline and Trae Gore drove in the runs in the two-run fourth to give FSC a 5-0 lead.

Eckerd scored three runs in the fifth and each team scored in the sixth, with the Moccasins' run coming on Gore's sacrifice fly. The Tritons picked up a solo run in the seventh, then each team scored in the eighth, with Braxton Chisholm accounting for the Moccasins' run with his second home run of the season. The Moccasins added an insurance run in the ninth when Gore scored from second on a dropped pop fly off the bat of Nick Stanley.

Gore and Zach Maggard, who had two hits, each extended their hitting streaks to 10 straight games. Kaline also had two hits. Jake Guengerich, who took over for starter Eddie Sipple in the fourth, picked up his first win of the season. Daniel Tillman, the last of five Moccasin pitchers used in the game, worked the final two innings to record his second save of the season.

The win was the Moccasins' sixth in a row and boosted their record to 7-3. Eckerd fell to 3-4. The Moccasins are back in the national rankings this week, coming in at No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Coaches Poll.

The Moccasins play at West Florida Wednesday night, then play a three-game weekend series at Delta State Friday and Saturday.
