Sipples Shutout Gives Mocs A Split At Delta State

Eddie Sipple's complete game, three-hit shutout in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader gave the Moccasins a split of their twinbill at Delta State.

The sophomore lefthander, who had no decisions in 15 appearances last season and three this season prior to Saturday, earned his first collegiate victory with the seven-inning gem. He struck out 10 and walked three in the 6-0 victory.

The Moccasins gave him all the runs he needed with a three-run first. Zac Maggard doubled in two runs and later scored himself on an error. Robbie Shields drove in a run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Jordan Guida's two-run single in the fifth closed out the Moccasin scoring.

With hits in both games, Maggard extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games.

Delta State won the first game, 4-3 in 10 innings, scoring an unearned run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning.  The Statesmen had tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on Clay Sartain's two-run homer off Daniel Tillman, who took the loss.

Will Cherry drove in two of the Moccasin runs with an infield out and his fourth home run of the season.  Maggard drove in the other run with a double. The Moccasins had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases, but Wade Kirkland flied out to right to end the inning.

Stephen Batman made the pitching start and worked seven innings, allowing just one run.

The Moccasins, who won three of four on the road trip to improve to 10-4 on the season, play Georgia Southwestern in a three-game homestand starting Friday at 7 p.m. at Henley Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 2 p.m.
