Maggard's RBI-single In 12th Gives Mocs 6-5 Win

Zach Maggard's one-out single in the bottom of the 12th scored Robbie Shields and gave the Moccasins a 6-5 win over Southern Connecticut Tuesday night at Henley Field.

With the Moccasins down 5-4 going to the bottom of the 12th, Wade Kirkland led off with a single to center and advanced to third when Shields dropped a double down the right field lilne. Pinch-hitter Adam Miller scored Kirkland with the tying run on an infield out, as Shields went to third. Will Cherry was intentionally walked, then with both the infield and outfield drawn in, Maggard singled over the right fielder's head to end the four-hour contest.

The win improved the top-ranked Moccasins' record to 24-5 and kept them unbeaten in 17 home contests this season. Southern Connecticut fell to 7-7.

Trailing 2-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, the Moccasins took the lead on Shields' three-run homer, his fifth of the year. Southern Connecticut quickly re-tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh on Kevin Bowerman's sacrifice fly.

The Owls took the lead in the top of the 10th on Andrew Babb's sacrifice fly. The Moccasins had two outs and nobody on base in their half of the inning when Nick Stanley singled. Cherry, on an 0-2 pitch, then tripled to center field, scoring pinch-runner Joel Frazer to tie the game at 4-4.

Nick DeProspo's infield out scored Karl Derbacher in the top of the 12th to put the Owls back in front before the Moccasins staged their dramatic rally in the bottom of the inning.

Dustin Merrell, the fifth Moccasin pitcher, picked up his first collegiate victory with two innings of work. Mike Connors took the loss for the Owls.

The two teams play Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Henley Field.
