BOCA RATON - Getting two early wins from their highly ranked doubles teams, #3 Barry jumped to an early lead and never looked back en route to a 5-0 win over #14 Florida Southern in the semifinals of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament.
The Buccaneers (21-2) had the tandem of Emanuel Fraitzl and Max Wimmer ranked #4 in the nation in doubles, while Ales Svigeli and Andrew Sharnov were #12. Both of those teams were victorious, though Florida Southern's closest match in doubles came at the third position where Greg Heartt and Ben Taylor fell by a count of 8-5.
Once in singles play, Wimmer put the Buccaneers up 4-0 with a win over Taylor. Roman Werschel had to fight off a challenge from C.J. Johnson at the number five position, but came away with a 7-5, 6-2 win that sealed the outcome.
The rest of the singles matches were left unfinished, though Roman Schirmaier and Nicolas Bigler were each ahead in the second set after dropping tough first sets. Ranked #27 in singles, Schirmaier had lost his first one to 5th-ranked Ales Svigeli 6-4, but was in control 4-1 in set two when play was halted. Bigler was also ahead 4-1 after falling 7-6 (8-6) in the first set.
The loss drops Florida Southern (14-8) into the third place match where the Moccasins will play Rollins on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Mocs won a grueling come-from-behind match over the Tars on April 1 by a score of 5-4.
