BOCA RATON - Erin Conroy and Veronika Kovacikova got Florida Southern off to a good start in its match against Barry, but the Moccasins were unable to score again. The 13th-ranked Buccaneers went on to win three straight-set singles matches to defeat # 18 Florida Southern 5-1 in the SSC Tournament 3rd-place match.
Conroy and Kovacikova won their doubles match at the #2 position, defeating Mei-Ling Ang and Laime Contreras 8-3 to run their record together to a team-best 15-7. The Buccaneers (16-7), however, picked up a big point at number one doubles in a battle of nationally ranked opponents, and they took a 2-1 lead going into singles play.
Once there, Barry won the first three completed matches to earn the win. Florida Southern (16-6) was ahead in two of the other singles matches, and Kovacikova had split two sets with her opponent before the match was stopped.
Meanwhile, Lynn University won the SSC women's title for the fourth straight year by topping Rollins 5-0. It was Lynn's ninth championship overall since becoming eligible for the SSC Tournament in 1999.
Florida Southern will now await word on a bid to the NCAA Tournament, with that announcement being made on Wednesday, April 29.
