Griffithâ?' Goal Not Enough as Florida Southern Falls to North Georgia, 2-1

Box Score

COLUMBUS, GA â€" Two days after playing the #2 team in the country to a scoreless tie, the Moccasins were on the field again to face another team that may have been just as good, albeit without the lofty ranking. This time, however, they came up just a little bit short as North Georgia scored two goals early in the second half to defeat #15 Florida Southern, 2-1.

The Saints (9-1) extended their winning streak to eight games with wins over both Florida Tech and Florida Southern during their weekend trip to Columbus. The Moccasins (5-3-2) out-shot them 16-10, including 11-6 in the second half, but got their only goal from Emily Griffith in the 74th minute. By that point, the Saints had already scored both of their goals, forcing the Mocs to play catch-up.

After Florida Southern had come close to scoring late in the first half on two shots by Princess Haley, North Georgia needed just over a minute of the second half to score the first goal of the day. Lauren Schenk fed a through ball to Emily Dover behind the Moccasin defense, and Dover was able to float a shot over a sliding Martina Tangen Billing to put the Saints on top 1-0.

Kelsey Martin made it 2-0 in the 54th minute by turning a bouncing ball inside the box into her fifth goal of the season.

Florida Southern had just two shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but took over the game after that. The Mocs used a corner kick in the 74th minute to break through, with Sydney O'Hair sending it back into the box where Griffith volleyed it into the net.

In the final 10 minutes, Florida Southern had six shots, four of them by Kara Moore, but was unable to dent the scoreboard again. The last of those came in the closing seconds but went wide as time expired.

Florida Southern returns home for its next game, hosting the University of Tampa on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
