SERIES HISTORY... Florida Southern won the only previous meeting last year, defeating the Gyrenes 88-57 in Jenkins Field House. Brandon Jenkins and Damon Ellison each scored 17 points to lead the Moccasins, and Terry Jenkins and Rion Rayfield scored 11 apiece. The Gyrenes were led by Kiel Lewis, who came off the bench for 15 points, five assists and three steals, and was 5-for-5 from the field. Overall, Ave Maria shot just 31 percent from the floor.

ABOUT FLORIDA SOUTHERN... The Moccasins last played a week ago Tuesday when they edged Armstrong Atlantic State at the buzzer, 79-78. It was the second time this year Florida Southern was involved in a game decided on the final shot, with the other a 77-75 loss to South Carolina-Aiken. This time the Mocs were on the winning end when Rion Rayfield made two free throws with 11.7 seconds to play, then blocked a shot by AASU with two seconds remaining. The Pirates got the offensive rebound but missed a second shot as time expired. While Rayfield led the Mocs with 17 points, they also got a season-high 15 points from forward A.J. Hawkins. Rayfield has now scored in double figures five straight games, and Brandon Jenkins and Damon Ellison have also had five double digit games this season. Terry Jenkins has done that three times in his five games played, and Cameron Wooten (8.3 pts., 4.0 rebs.) has done it three times off the bench.

ABOUT AVE MARIA... The Gyrenes are in their third year of basketball, and their second year as members of The Sun Conference, a league that also features Polk County schools Warner, Webber International and Southeastern. They went 14-15 overall last year and 7-9 in the conference, and with four returning starters, they're off to a 6-3 start this year. They're also averaging more than 86 points per game and have reached the century mark four times. Kiel Lewis is the leading scorer for the Gyrenes and ranks second in the conference with a 20.4 average, and All-TSC selection Dylan Fugate is scoring 16.7 points per game. Marc Rozanski and Jimmy Torney are the team's other two returning starters, and Rozanski is one of two Division II transfers in the regular rotation. The other is Colin Voreis, who played in 16 games for Alaska-Anchorage as a freshman in 2008 during the Seawolves' run to the national semifinals.
